  • Found the problem?

Well, I'm not sure what happened to my old thread, but I think I found the problem. My new 8800 GT requires 400w of power, but my computer supplies only 300w. It has become obvious to me that upgrading the power will be much harder then a simple card switch, and honestly I have no idea what to do here. How difficult is it to upgrade the power source? Anyone have any reccomendations on what to get? Should I just let a professional handle this, or attempt to do this myself? I could just get a new computer but given mine is only 16 months old, I don't want to toss it yet.

    Is it a prebuilt machine?

BTW you're old thread got lost in a database rollback.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

New PSUs aren't difficult to install if you know a few things about the inside of your computer. It can be time-consuming, however.

That could make upgrading parts like the power supply difficult. If you're lucky, it uses a standard power supply.

I would recommend having a friend look at it, or take it to a local shop. Just don't take it to best buy and have geek squad break it or something similar.

            Re: Found the problem?

Open up your computer, jot down the PSU's model, and look it up on the internet. You should find enough information that would make replacing it much simpler to do yourself.

I would also recommend taking it to a local shop or computer hobbyist friend. No offense, Onion, but given some of the confusion you've shown on this matter, I don't think installing it yourself would be the best idea. Also, just to pile on to what Mhurron said, absolutely do not use geeksquad.

Alright, well... I'm going to have to think on this for a bit... I'll see if I can upload a picture later tonight. For now I switched my old 8500 back in. I really liked seeing my games run on the 8800, but at least I have a computer that works now...

The first thing I ever fixed on my computer was the PSU. They really aren't that hard to replace. Just pull out 1 cord from the old PSU and put in the new cord.

uummm no its not that easy ;p

the PSU is connected to everything that uses power on the PC

                        DVD/CD drives
                        Floppy drive
                        HDD drives
                        motherboard (in two places)
                        Video cards (sometimes)
fans (if you have more then normal in the system)

its not just a simple plug

I think what LN was saying was systematically pull one rail out of each component from the old PSU while replacing it with the new rail on the new PSU. If that's not what he meant, then ya "its not just a simple plug."

                            Re: Found the problem?

Okay, so I got my new Corsair 550w PSU in the mail today. I open it up, started swapping out the plugs, and everything has gone great (I think). My new PSU is in the computer, and it works just fine with my old graphics card, however, I still have the same problem when I put my 8800 GT in (computer doesn't boot up right). Since this is a 550w PSU, and my card requires 400w, I really can't firgure out what the problem is... anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

EDIT: I got the 4 pin working, and my PSU is running, still having problems with my card though.

                              Re: Found the problem?

The 8 pin connector is actually a 4+4 connector (I'm assuming). That 4 pin socket on the motherboard is actually to power your CPU not PCIE. The PCIE is for the video card. The 4+4 should be able to be snapped apart (seperated) but GO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS first. One of the 2 will be an exact match to the socket. If there is nothing in the instructions about this, which isn't likely, then go to the manufacturer's website or google and read on some tech forums. They might even have a picture guide of how to do it. Good luck.
