  • HDTVs using DVI/HDMI

    Hi guys

I was wondering is there like a wire that would convert your DVI from the video card to HDMI? or are there video cards that already use HDMI? If so what's the benefit to each? which one comes out on top?

    Thanks ^ ^

    Re: HDTVs using DVI/HDMI

DVI and HDMI are exactly the same as one another, image-quality-wise. The principal differences are that HDMI carries audio as well as video, and uses a different type of connector, but both use the same encoding scheme, and that's why a DVI source can be connected to an HDMI monitor, or vice versa, with a DVI/HDMI cable, with no intervening converter box.

stripped straight from DVI vs. HDMI vs. Component Video -- Which is Better?

But if you insist, HDMI DVI adapters

ram has good quality cables for half if not more then half the price of a monster cable

Edit : Ram's website seems to be either running super slow or down, [ame]http://www.amazon.com/Monster-DVI-HDMI-High-Performance-Female-Adapter/dp/B0002NXCO6[/ame] << theres a dvi to hdmi adaptor, you would have to buy a hdmi cable for that one, I will see if I can locate a full cable

Edit 2 : [ame]http://www.amazon.com/MONSTER-CABLE-ULTRA-HDMI-VIDEO/dp/B0013NRHYK/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1209840850&sr=1-16[/ame] I would go with a monster cable or a ram cable, remember the cheaper the cable the cheaper the wires used which is what is the signal is going over.

      Oh one last question.

If HDMI gives both video and audio quality, then does using a video card that output HDMI make the monitor use it's original speakers?

        Re: HDTVs using DVI/HDMI

i dont know about that, you can still run separate audio cables, but if your monitor has an hdmi input and its own speakers, then it might don't know vid cards well enought to know if any with hdmi output can even send audio.

side note: i believe the reason they moved to hdmi was something about hdmi being harder to crack and made pirating more difficult.

Well I was mainly looking into the whole 1 LCD fits all (games, monitor, living room display..etc) and came across this weird comment from some guy on newegg that said the resolution could be pushed higher with HDMI cable then with DVI. So that got me curious about the HDMI and DVI thing

yeah you can run seperate audio but hdmi has the ability to carry both signals over 1 cable, Like when I am watching tv I have the cable box hooked up to the tv via hdmi and to the reciever via fiber optic. When I wanna watch a hd movie on the hd channels I switch the audio out from the tv speakers to the reciever and it sends the audio over the fiber instead of the hdmi.

yeah, i just didn't know if there were any video cards with HDMI outs that also sent audio through the same port
