  • Some help with a Y VGA adapter

    I recently found a VGA Y spillter/adapter. it has 1 male end and 2 female ends...I'd call that a good time hehe..oh...

anyway i was wondering if i could use this for my PC and Xbox...I was looking around for info on this but the closest i came was this Dell : TrippLite HD-15/Female to HD-15/Male Display Splitter Cable - 1ft : Cables : Home & Home Office

I'd like to find a VGA Y adapter where i can switch between my PC and Xbox 360. i checked dell, sony, gateway and newegg and they didn't have a huge selection and no feedback i could find.

if anyone knows where i could find one that'd be great.

edit: I'm gonna check out my local microcenter and see if they have anything i could use.

You want a KVM. Personally I've never seen a cable or box just for video.

You would then also need video adapters for your XBox to VGA or DVI.

The cable you have is backwards BTW, you would need 2 male - 1 female.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

HTTP Error 418 - I'm A Teapot - The resulting entity body MAY be short and stout.

oh the way i saw it was since the VGA cord for my xbox is male and same with my computer VGA cord i'd plug the male end into my monitor and plug my xbox and PC into the 2 female ends...so it wouldn't work that way?

Re: Some help with a Y VGA adapter

The cable you have is for taking one video signal and mirroring it to two monitors, it doesn't switch signals.

You need something that takes 2 inputs and switches between them.

The reason your XBox VGA cable has a male end is because it was made to plug directly into a LCD. This is also why it comes with a gender bender, in case your monitor doesn't have a removable VGA cable. PC VGA ports are Female, so the cables going between a monitor and a PC are either integrated at the monitor end with a male plug to the PC or the LCD comes with a Male/Male cable.

Gotcha thats understandable. I'm thinking either try and find an adapter that can share my monitor between my PC and Xbox or just get another cheap 22" LCD monitor...and a desktop boombox that has a digital output for sound...because I havn't seen any monitors that have the red and white RCA inputs on them usually just the 3.5mm audio port if it comes with built in speakers.

Since you have the VGA adapter, a KVM is all you need, though you would have to be careful finding one, sometimes they have a maximum resolution setting that is too low either for the 360 or your LCD. That should really only affect the cheapest KVM's though.

For sound you really will want a separate sound system. I've never heard speakers integrated into LCD's that sounded anywhere near decent.

this is kinda wrapping my brain thinking about it. Please be patient with me...

So i'm looking at this KVM. 2male 1female like you said. I'm trying to place it all together but i'm missing something and i don't know what.

Edit: I'm guessing with that KVM it;d go something like this... the 2 males on the NVM go to the PC and monitor the Female on the KVM goes to the Xbox...sounds about right...everythings plugged in...but i'm thinking the PC should be plugged into the female port on the KVM...maybe i'm wrong...

Also thanks Mhurron for all the help
