  • Gainward GFX card

It's the Nvidia GeForce 8500GT. Anyone else using it?
At times it overheats (the expertool shows 51 celcius degrees but whatever)
and gets stuck every 20-30 minutes.
Anyone else with the same prob?

I have 2 8600GT's that don't over heat. Then again, I have a couple of fans. Maybe you need to either see if the existing fan is clogged with dirt, or get a new heatsink/fan.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

Not necessarily. A lot of the 8600GT and lower 8 series cards have passive cooling. Which works fine if your case is properly ventilated.

bolded for emphasis. worse comes to worse, buy a quiet 80mm case fan and aim it (or secure with zip ties) at the heatsink on your video card

btw, you must be euro, Gainward haven't made cards in the US for ages

            Thanks Yyg!

Yeah I'm in Greece. I have a fan tied on the heatsink but it's not very good. Still I gotta play FF for 5 hours to get stuck so i'm content.

                Re: Gainward GFX card

You can purchase after market heatsink/fan setups for most cards.

If your card is over heating, you have a problem. You are going to break something if you don't do something about it. Adding a fan and it is still locking up means your whole system is most likely getting too hot and all that fan is doing is circulating increasingly hot air.

Get fans. Get that damn case cool. Apart from the slots on your PC made for fans, there are also fans that fit in a drive bay, a PCI card slot, or FFS you could just cut a hole in the side and add another fan. If your system is overheating, you have problems. Period.
                  ------------------------------------------
Also, keep it in a well ventilated area. Computer on a desk and computer inside a desk are two completely different things.

Another option that you could think about is water cooling.

...everybody else hit the nail on the head.

You need more circulation in that case. ...or water.

Water cooling is probably overkill here.

....true. But still a viable cooling option. It's also fun as hell to do.

Water cooling is not a viable option for anyone who knows little enough about computers to consider overheating alright.

He/she knows enough to know that he or she is running hot. We all started somewhere. I would think that this was as good a time as any to learn a little about cooling and some of the options that he/she has with it. I'd rather give options and let the OP decide. He/she can decide if it's within their skill level. I'm not going to assume that it isn't....

Looking at a thermometer does not take knowledge. Knowing that overheating = bad takes a bit. If you don't have even that bit, you have far more to learn before you jump into adding water cooling.

Not to mention if you don't even have that bit, it's very likely that water cooling is overkill because you don't have any ventilation.
