  • Seeking new computer, need suggestions.

As some of you may know, I make FFXI videos. Regularly. As such I also play FFXI of course. We only have one computer, so I have FFXI and my videos and movies on the same machine.

Currently I have no qualms with the computer I use (Even though it's old, running out of memory soon, and lags quite a bit and it's got too much on it, it still runs decently), but the time will soon come that I have to move out of this house and live on my own, and I can't very well take the family computer with me so I'll need to buy one for myself.

What I'm looking for is a powerful enough machine in which I can keep my video working tools on and also play FFXI with a good frame rate - as good a frame rate as possible (I've seen youtube videos of people with insanely good fps in besieged). I'm no expert with computer specs so I'm going to ask here.

Probably your best bet will be to put more money in RAM, but then that goes for nearly anything nowadays.

Before people start giving suggestions, are you going to be making this computer from parts yourself, or are you going to be buying one from a manufacturer (Dell, Gateway, Sony, etc.)? Because that changes things quite a bit.

I'll probably be building it, since I hear it's cheaper and better that way. I don't know how but I'll learn it

Unfortunately building is no longer cheaper. Breaks my heart too, believe me. I still build my own but thats my own stubborn pride. I tell myself its because I get exactly what I want then and also because I have a ton of parts around the house. (I usually never use them anyways...I guess its just a way of convincing myself that I'm doing the right thing. lol)

My advice....do a rough price estimate on the do it yourself model and then do some hunting online on a pre built and poke around in the stores too. I think you'll find that you'll save some money buying pre built and get pretty much of what you'll need.

I still build my own because its the only way today in the Uk that you can get a machine with XP still on it. It will take a herd of horses to pull me towards vista, especiallky as my mates laptop went down for the umpteenth time due to a vista brain fart.

If you are lookinga t video rendering there are a few things you need.

Memory... minimum 2Gb (3-4 if using vista) and a decent graphics card with no less than 256mb on board memory (preferably a DX10 one so you can also play he latest games over the next 3-4 years). A good duel core processor will help, you don't need to spend to much on that but around £250-£300 would give you a chipset and motherboard to last the next 5 years of games expansion.

Not true at all. I built my own PC and saved 400-1400$ (depending on manufacturer) for the same (meaningful) specs.

Jarre is pretty much right. My biggest recommendation is that you go to your local library (or bookstore) and check out (or buy) Upgrading and Repairing PCs, the latest edition they have in stock. Check for "Scott Mueller" and "Que (Publishing)" to make sure it's the same book. It has just about everything you'd want to know about the hardware side of computers, and plenty of stuff you don't. Reading through it will tell you pretty much everything you'll need to build a PC yourself, except for the most recent specs, and that should be available on the website.

Using XP or using Vista, a gaming computer has no reason to go over 2GB RAM now.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

He wanted to render video.... That is a memory hugger especially under vista. even though boards can now support 8GB, windows will only use a max of 4mb.

Desktop apps using 2gb ram is hogging. Also, Vista has better memory management then XP.

On it's own, 32bit systems address less then 4GB. Enabling PAE will let XP use 4GB with a performance penalty. 64bit windows will address far more then that.

If he was at a level where he could really use 2+GB, he wouldn't be asking here.

Why not? I'm playing BF2142 on Vista, and an extra two gigs of RAM using the ReadyBoost feature definately helps my performance.
