You might also be interested in some of Linux's programs like blender, GIMP, open source art stuff. If nothing else, if you have an afternoon to kill, consider downloading something like Ubuntu Studio and fooling around with a dualboot.
Many of those applications are also available for Win32. Even if you don't want to/can't play with a *nix yet, there's some really good software that you can start using that sets you up to be easily platform agnostic.

      well, yeah.

Where's the fun in that, though?

Darn it! My favorite OS is not listed there!
        Windows 2003!

It is not a gimped Windows and having the ability to install it on as many computer as necessary to test things is always nice.

But my runner up would be FreeBSD, I don't like RedHat as much as I would like to.

Unless you have a volume or MSDN license, 2003 requires activation just like XP and Vista do, and has the same activation limitations.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

Yes, I do, another reason why I like it.
Though mainly because the OS isn't gimped on Windows 2003 compared to their workstation counter-parts.

It's pretty much the same OS, just doesn't have the visual elements turned on, is configured to favor background tasks by default, can host the Active Directory and it's DirectX doesn't always work right.

I mention DirectX since it sounds like you're running 2003 as your desktop.

I use what plays all the best games. Which would be Windows. Specially since all the people who make the free mmorpgs make them for windows.

                  Re: Favorite OS?

PC gaming is pretty much dead. Except for MMOs, there haven't really been any 'awesome' games released for PC that would make it favorable over a console.

And, especially nowadays, why people don't start releasing MMOs on consoles is beyond me.

And, to Feba, congratulations on the 100th post.

Well, the history of MMOs on consoles isn't so good. FFXI and PSU? It's not exactly begging for people to port.

Although with the 360, PS3, and Wii all being very closely tied to the internet, and almost gimped without being connected, I wouldn't be surprised at all if we started seeing more MMOs on consoles soon. I'm honestly going to be very surprised if WoW isn't ported to 360 within the next few years. I'm amazed they haven't announced it already.

big problem with MMOs on consoles though- not much room for interface, when you consider the low resolution most TVs have. If you think FFXI feels cramped on your PC at 1024x768, normal non-HD TVs are something like 500x400 (not precise, but it's in that general area). This is probably the biggest reason FFXI uses a menu system like it does- not because it's better for controllers, but because there wouldn't be room on the screen otherwise!

Skimmed posts but thought I would add my 2 pennies.

Favourite OS? Hard to answer...I guess Id have to say XP. Used it to death, so I am comfortable with it.

HOWEVER - I have used several distis of Linux, and exlpored some areas which are a tad more techinical than everyday Desktop useage (had to research Wireless Security for work) and that blew me away with what it could do.

Even ran Linux for my home desktop for a bit, till working from home made that very difficult. Had to run Windows specific apps, and Wine didnt cut it (I mean VERY windows specific), nor could I be bothered to Dual Boot/Swap HDD's.

So, I have a huge lustering for Linux and I do miss it. Sadly, as the MS monoploy goes, 99% of the time I am working on a Windows box, so ultimately that is what I am more comfortable with.

I recommend Virtual Box, personally. Free (as in beer, I know. not sure if it's open sauce), worked great when I used it. made ubuntu run slow as hell, but putting a lot of memory into one thing will do that.
