  • Help me out!

My computer is now having issues playing games. This problem started happening literally three hours ago, and I can't for the life figure out why. Today I bought, installed, and began to play Command and Conquer 3 which worked fine until I left and returned to continue playing.

Now, during any game I play, the computer will randomly shut off. The game doesn't crash, the computer doesn't freeze or restart, just a quick, complete power down. To restart the computer I have to unplug and plug the power source back in or it will remain unresponsive.

I think this might be a heating or power issue, but I'm not sure. I'm hoping somebody here might be a little bit more savvy about my current situation.

    Thanks.

    Re: Help me out!

What's your PSU rated at? It is possible that the game is taxing your system and causing components to draw too much power. Post your GPU, CPU, RAM, and PSU ratings.

(I hope my over-usage of acronyms isn't an annoyance).

I am hardly technical, I learn as I go and this hasn't ever happened for me before. I'm guessing the PSU is associated with the power supply, but where would I go about checking that?

        Re: Help me out!

        PSU=Power Supply Unit

Sounds to me like it's insufficient for whatever you're doing, this could be the case if C&C3 updated drivers causing the card to consume more power. This could also be caused by drvers making the card overheat, but i'd look at the PSU first. We still need you to list your various components before we can help though- a 350w powersupply is probably enough for a GeForce 6 series, but nowhere near running 2 8800GTX in SLI.

this still does nothing to tell us about your powersupply.

              Re: Help me out!

Hmm... it sounds more like the C&C install corrupted something in your OS/DX rather than an overheating issue, those issues usually happen due to new hardware, but not due to software.

Maybe it screwed up DirectX or something like that, I'd suggest uninstalling and performing a System Restore before blaming the issue on your power supply.

Edit> You should also check the Game's boards for similar issues happening after installing the game, there might be something similar already posted there.

                Re: Help me out!

Complete power-down isn't a software issue. You can blue-screen until you're blue in the face, but the worst your system should do software wise is spontaneously reboot.

Considering that he has to unplug and replug in the power cord, this is almost undoubtedly a power supply problem (i.e. it has to reset a fuse internally probably).

                  Re: Help me out!

I found the fan in the PSU wasn't working, so I replaced the whole thing and it's working fine.

                  Sorry to bug you guys.
