  • Need help with the modem

    My modem lost connection suddenly last night . I am through road-runner(via time-warner). I tried calling road-runner customer support and got a run-around. The support guy on the line told me I had to call AOL. I truied to explane to him that the modem was through road-runner(via time-warner), but he kept telling me to contact AOL(he even transferred me to AOL). I hung up before I talked to anyone at AOL because I don't think they can help. I wont be able to contact Time-warner until tomorrow. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of anything I could try before I contact Time-warner? I've tried to unplug the power, and also un-plugged the cabel leading into it. I did both of those about 5-6 times with no luck. If anyone has any ideas I could use them, seeing as the people that should have helped me blew me off(Road-runner).

    I'm assuming your modem has lights on it like mine does, and if so when you plug the modem in do all the lights come on (like send, receive, activity, etc...)? If not, then more than likely your modem's dead and there is nothing you can do short of either buying your own modem, but you'll wanna make sure Time Warner supports user owned hardware; some providers don't, in which case you pretty much have to take your modem in for a replacement, or wait 3 days for a tech to come out with a new one. If you can buy your own, CompUSA and Bestbuy sell them, and I think even my Wal-Mart carries them. That's also a good way to save yourself 3-5 bucks a month in modem rental fees, you just gotta call them to set it up cause you need the addresses to program the new modem (the instructions walk you through it) .

    If the modem seems to be working then check the drivers for your ethernet card and make sure they didn't get goofed up. I'd reinstall them anyway, just to be sure...should be included with your mobo drivers unless you have a pci card. When that's done, try connecting again, if it still doesn't work, you can try going through the network connection wizard and trying to pick it up through the autodetect.

    That's all I can think of...if none of that works then I really have no suggestions. Try your modem with a different computer if you can.

      At 1st the 2 lights under the power light come on solid for 1 sec, then it goes to a solid power light and flashing send light. since the local office is about 5 min away ill just bring it into the office. Maybe i'll get lucky and it will start working on its own. I even tried hiolding down the "standby" button.

      TY for the suggestions.

        lol-I just thought of something.--1st my x-box dies on me, then about 3 weeks later my modem dies on me--at least SE hasn't accused me of anything illegal--yet

          Computer problems always come in 3's for me...about 2 months ago my brother's hard drive failed, then about 3 weeks later my main hard drive failed.... now my router and dvd-burner are starting to go... ; ;

          I really hate computers, sometimes...

            The thing I hate the most about computers is the horrible support at many of the compamies that make them. At times I wonder if they know any more than I do about computers(and I don't really know that much). The other thing i've noticed(espically with cell phones) is that something will breakdown right after the warrienty runs out(lol-except in the case of my x-box which died 7 days before the warrenty expired)

              See, that's the main reason why I buy service plans on all my electronics. I always thought they were just a waste of money until a couple years ago. I bought an older Compaq desktop from a friend to use as an internet machine so I could game and surf at the same time, and within 2 weeks of me buying it from her the hard drive failed. I was pissed off, but she had bought a 2 year service plan on it so she just took it down to the store and they replaced the drive and restored everything for free.

              Everything I buy has a service plan on it now...and since computer stuff is outdated so quickly, 90% of the time when you return something you end up getting a free upgrade. I have a friend that's on his 3rd Xbox 360...he always buys the repair plans and when he takes it in they don't bother fixing it, they just give him a new one on the spot and send the broken one back to Microsoft. I've returned monitors, video cards, sound cards, motherboards...and always end up with something better than what I started with for little (if any) money out of pocket.
