  • Sharing a connection?

The hardest part about living with a brother or sister is when they too love computers.

You see, I have a Westell modem from the Verizon DSL I use. My computer is so out of date it doesn't even have an Enternet port, so I always used USB. When I had finally brought a Network Adapter for my PS2 just to play Metal Gear Online, it wouldn't let me play. Strange, Enternet slot was all hooked up to the modem and Adapter, why won't it work, I kept asking myself... then, I just removed the USB cord of the modem, and that thing passed through DNAS in a heartbeat.

Now that I will be joining FFXI soon, this will be tough. With a job and a sister who goes on an internet frenzy, I won't beable to play on my PS2 with her on the internet at the same time.

So the question is - is there a way to share it through USB and Enternet? Possibly by some computer option maybe? Though I think the only option is to pull some money out my wallet...

    Re: Sharing a connection?

    Hello,
first of all, you need to know that your modem only can handle one connetion.

you need something like a router (router connects to the internet, so it`s one connection for the modem), a router can "route several devices over the internet using 1 IP-adress". i'm sorry, can`t explain it better ^^

there are different kinds of router, some of them has usb and ethernet support (most of them have an intregrated modem too), that would be the easiest way for you in my opinion.

you can also modify your PC to act as router, so your pc need to be connected with the internet and your ps2 with your pc. but thats a bit difficult i guess.

i hope that was a little help for you.
    good luck

      Don't get a USB device.

      Don't do this either.

You want an ethernet router, maybe a switch depending on the locations of your devices and get a cheap network card for your computer.

There's some information here that might help.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

Ethernet cards are cheap--you can get them for $10 if you're being really frugal. Routers can also be cheap. There's no reason not to upgrade your network. Never route packets through a computer unless there's some specific reason for it (e.g. load balancing).
