    Re: Internet Explorer 7 Released

So what's so great about Firefox? Seems like most people use that over IE nowadays. I've never bothered installing it since IE loads webpages for me as well as anything else, and I can't think of any features that would make browsing so much better for me ..

Tabs are the biggest reason i use firefox over IE, they are just super convinient, but now that IE has them its kinda even for both of the browsers but i will still stick to firefox becaue i am use to it.

How is tabbed browsing better than switching between windows with alt-tab or the taskbar?

          Re: Internet Explorer 7 Released

I have been using the IE7 beta on my laptop, and Firefox on my Desktop, and i really dont have a preference, although there are more plugins for firefox.

In the end, go with what you know, IE is better for windows, but firefox works well on any platform.

P.S. I only got Firefox because a Half-life mod called Natural Selection wont run with IE7 installed.

                Re: Internet Explorer 7 Released

I'll just stay with Firefox...I saw pictures of the beta and IE 7 just looks like MS ripped off Firefox and slapped an IE skin on it.

I've also heard of people getting PC troubles when they install IE7(plus the attackers will be in IE7 post haste)

For me it comes down to having 10 tabs, or 10 different browsers opened. At work I rely on a lot of different webpages to track various things, not to mention personal pages like FFXIOnline, Gmail, Google Reader, and the like. Currently I have 7 tabs open in Firefox, and 4 other apps open on my Task bar. If I did this in IE6, that would give me 11 different tabs on my Task bar that I would have to sift through just to get to one thing.

If for some reason I click a random link on a webpage, and it crashes every single IE6 window I have open, I have to reopen everything. Tab Mix Plus extention for Firefox allows me to recover all of the tabs I had open, it also afford me Alt+Tab to switch through my tabs. I also really like the various extensions available to Firefox. (Weather extension, Gmail & GSpace, not to mention FFXI Finder and Vana'diel Clock.)

I'm also an OpenSource users, so that's another reason why I lean towards Firefox. I've had very good experiences in FreeBSD and a number of Linux distros.

Opera saves your tabs when you exit so you don't have to open them all again. That's why I prefer Opera over both IE and Firefox for power surfing. When I only need to check something quickly I use Firefox since opening Opera with 18 tabs drains a lot more resources.

As long as IE works for you, there's no reason to switch. Personally it boils down to this:

                      1) I can customize Firefox into something that exactly fits me, no matter what platform I use.
Clearly, that's not true of IE. If IE had better customization features, and was portable, I'd probably use it.
                      2) It's Open Source
Like tdh, I've had very good expriences with Open Source Software -- generally better than commercial software. So if OSS keeps providing me with good experiences, why shouldn't I keep going back?
                      3) It's not Microsoft.
Now before you roll your eyes.... I'm not an ABM'er.
I don't use Alla because I don't like the business practices of an certain organization that they seem to be attached to.
I tend to avoid games by Blizzard because of their handling of the issues around the bnet project.
I avoid Microsoft because I disapprove of some their business practices. This disapproval is manifested by my using as little of their software as possible.

                        Re: Internet Explorer 7 Released

I do like that you can set it to open the same pages everytime you open IE, but other than that, its not that great.
You can do the same in FF. I beleive you just add "|" between the different webaddresses in your Homepage list. Or open the pages you want and select "Choose Current Pages" in Options->General

Taskmage, give firefox a shot, you'll probably like it. Not to mention the amount of plugins you can get, all of which are useful. I used to have about 10-15 for ffxi before I quit, most of which were useful; from japanese dictionaries (hover over a kanji for it's meaning), to a vana'diel clock, which is very nice to have all built into the browser.

Not to mention, personally I think IE looks a lot more glamourized than FF, after you put everyone on classic mode and such

It always seem to break CSS implementations and never really cooperates with you on every other aspect of web development.

Opera is more standards compliant then either IE or Firefox. The reason there are so many problems with Operas CSS is because neither IE or Firefox stick to the standards and go off on their own tangents. Since both are used more then Opera, web programmers target those two broken implementations. This is however to the detriment of those that do use W3C standard compliant browsers.

                                Technically though, Aeni is right:
It never conforms to W3 standards the way Firefox and IE does.
Opera's strict adherence to the standards isn't like Firefox's and IE's looser interpretation.

It always seem to break CSS implementations and never really cooperates with you on every other aspect of web development.
I've rarely seen Opera break a CSS implementation that wasn't already broken.

The nice thing I've found with Opera, is if you target it primarily during the initial interface creation, it's easier to make your design work in the other big browsers (IE, Firefox, Safari) during finalization.
