that's absurd. maybe when it first came out there were compatibility problems with certain software because they changed some things around, but it's been over 2 years now. install SP2.

That issue where your comp just can't reboot after you install SP2 is still happening btw, absurd but it still happens.

Good news is you can usually fix it by restarting windows in safe mode and uninstalling SP2 using the add/remove programs function in the control panel (after the first time it doesn't load properly the OS will give you the option to start in Safe Mode).


Edit> Your best bet with SP2 is simply reinstalling windows and upgrading to SP2 before installing anything else.

Ok, and if i'm not hacking ffxi for learning purposes, would you like to show me what the hell I gained from it? I sure as hell didn't get around town faster, I didn't use it to get into the ruins, I didn't go claim monsters, I had it for two days, and I showed everyone everything I did with them.


I didn't say it was a defect, I said that the manufacturer only included a backup CD, no codes. I don't know about you, but i'm not tossing a fairly reliable, old PC, spending hundreds of dollars and making a new one, just because microsoft decided to treat all of their own customers like thieves.

My computer came with windows, I own windows, if microsoft doesn't like that i'm not wasting my time tracking down codes, they can deal with the manufacturer.

Not neccarily. The Windows EULA states that "You do not own Windows", but you own the license to use it. So at any time they can actually deactivate it for whatever reason they want. /shudder

Now, back to my problem. I fixed it!!!! ^.^
When my Win32 Generic Host processes went kaplut, one thing ALSO died--Windows Update. Believe it or not, on August 16th M$ released an update that fixed it. A hacker was toying with a Windows vulnerability that caused an RPC (Remote Process Call, if I remember correctly) Buffer Overrun. This affected SVCHost.exe and caused Windows Operating systems to stop working properly, including servers.

What was wonky?
-Windows Update. It deactivates when you muose over it, and vanishes.
-Sound Devices, they would disappear.
-Internet (On some PCs it may not work). You may get a Winsocks Initialization Failure.
-SVCHOST.exe
-File Searching on your PC.
-Switching User Accounts fails.
-In some cases, my firewall (Kerio personal Firewall).

Those were all that I could find. But now it's all fixed. Thanks, all who helped me fix it, 'specially Feba.

eh, if microsoft wants to deactivate my windows for no reason, then i'm pirating it. I mean, if a car dealership took back a paid car, sure as hell i'd go get it back.

I'd have to say you were fiddled by your company you bought the PC from then. Business's are required BY LAW to put the certificate of authenticity on your base unit. If they didn't do this then you are already running a pirated version of Windows XP.

You will feel the blunt end of it first, as you are the first point of contact that microsoft has. If you can't provide sufficent means to prove you bought the pc from that company directly then that puts you in the crud. Make sure you have reciepts, without those its all your fault...
