    Re: Video Card probs.

It sound like your computer, failing to initialize the video subsystem, fails to POST. Really though, there's not enough information here diagnose the problem. If you can, include what motherboard you have, as well as the brand & model of your Geforce 5200.

That said, the two things that jump out at me as possiblities are:

    1) The card is simply dead. Somewhere between your friend giving it to you, and you putting in your computer it received some sort damage (e.g. it was dropped, receive a static discharge, was used as a deep sea fishing lure...).

    2) If this is an AGP video card, depending on the age of your motherboard and the video card, you could end up with voltage mismatch.

An older motherboard with an AGP 2.0 (supporting AGP 2X and 4X) works at 1.5 volts, but new AGP video cards built on the AGP 3.0 standard (support AGP 8X) works on 0.8 volts (I think). If this is the scenerio (old mother board not supporting AGP 3.0, newer card not supporting AGP 2.0) there's really good chance the video card is fried.

Likewise, you could have the reverse. A video card that doesn't support AGP 3.0, and a mother board that doesn't support the older AGP 2.0. In this case, your video card would be trying to pull too much power through the AGP port and could damage your MB.

If it is a case of an AGP version/voltage mismatch, theres a couple avenues:
    - Check to see if your motherboard can be configured to support the videocard through either BIOS settings, or jumpers
    - If the above isn't possible, perhaps the video card can jumpered to support the AGP standard your motherobard does

You're talking to a guy who can't figure out how to look for UPS store locations on theupsstore.com.
