    Re: one fast question

I agree, go with an HP if you are deadset on Compaq. The quality assurance and PCBs used are a bit better. Anyone know how the AMD Turion64 M34 functions in benchmark testing. All HPs come with ATI Randeon 128mbs or Nvidia 256mbs for separate video (not sharing onboard RAM like POS laptops previously). 512mb/1gb (extra $74) all priced under $1k. But not sure on the processor. Would like some feedback though since a laptop would be more convenient for me as I dont have a lot of space nowadays and would like portability.

    Double Post Edited:
I thought you wanted to keep it around a grand. That alienware is well near $2k....and besides. Alienware is overrated and overpriced:

They're the same company. On the consumer and low end commercial market, HP's lines were dropped in favor of Compaq's which were simply rebanded.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

Well its not a bad computer, it will run it at mediocore settings. Its a amd prosseseor so the 1.8 ghz is probley closer to uper 2 ghz, and the graphics card is not bad. My freind had that in his desk top before he got his new one and could run cs:s at ok settings and even run battle field 2. Only thing you may want to do is upgrade the ram if you could. it is always good to do. But I ran ffxi on a 800 mhz 256 mb of ram and a 32 mb graphics card when the game came out on lowest settings and well of course some lag. You will be fine, this is the kind of lap top im looking for if I ever can afford one, but I want a num pad which are hard to find on lap tops.
Also, A true gaming laptop can not be made your self so the only ones are like alien were and other noob companies that over price stuff to the max. You should stick with what you can get for your money, in other words a laptop like that can run older games and some newer games at low settings.

          Re: one fast question

For comparison purposes, I recently (June 2006) built a desktop PC for about $1100 with the following specs:

          Asus P5ND2-SLi
          Intel Dual Core 2.66GHz
          1GB DDR2-566 (A-data)
          200GB SATA-2 (WD)
          GeForce 7600GT 256MB (Albatron)
          400W power supply
          20" Widescreen BenQ FP202W
          DVD/CD combo drive
          Keyboard/Mouse/etc

You could go with a slightly less expensive GPU + Monitor and easily be at $800. Honestly, I priced laptops, and unless you plan on doing a LOT of work on a computer outside of your room, it is probably better to go for a desktop. IMHO.

Edit: I run FFXI at 1680x1050, with the rendering resolution setting in the registry set for 1680x1680. So far, I only lag in cities, especially near AH.
