  • What Desktop?

Can anyone suggest something that could run ffxi with a cheap price tag?

I myself don't know everything about computers. What I can say is that you're going to want a lot of video ram. (1k preferred) Then comes the video card. And of course, you're going to want 2-3 gigahertz processor. Check out the system requirement for the game and budget yourself accordingly.

This is what I have, and it runs great:

1022 MB ram, Pentum M processor, Radeon X300 video card.

        Re: What Desktop?

Well, I've got an IBM laptop that's worth about 2.2k dollars, mainly because of it's portability. (laptops are worth way more than desktops)

However, you should make your own desktop computer, which isn't too hard. I myself built a computer with my dad a couple of years ago, and remember it not being too difficult. Just know where to get the parts for your computer and you should be set, plus its A LOT cheaper than buying it already made.

            Re: What Desktop?

Dell desktop dimension series. Two years ago, I bought for 350$ US, now it shopuld be even cheaper. It's slow as HELL in besieged, but I can still get around with a good bit of lag.

            http://www.dell.com/content/products...=19&l=en&s=dhs

Unfortunately, mine doesn't even have an AGP (i think? as opposed to PCI) slot, so I can't do much to improve the visual quality, but it suits my needs.

EDIT: There are also gaming PCs at around 1k on there if that's what you're looking for.

I have around 800$ to spend. My PC now is a dell demension series, I got it like 5 years ago for about 600$ i think. I'm looking for more of a gaming computer though.

              Double Post Edited:

Anyone know if this would be able to handle FFXI without lag? I know that it will lag during alliances and other crowded areas but I'm looking for something that won't lag in a pt.

                Re: What Desktop?

I build my own desktops, however, I just purchsed 2 gaming laptops from dell.

I got Dell 1505 series laptops, 15.1 widescreen display
                x300 ati 128mb video card
                1 gb ram
                dual core processor (2.4ghz)

Both laptops together were $2040 bucks, but had upgrades for HDD to 80gb for me, 100 for my wife, and some other goodies (killer backpack carrying cases ect)

As far as building your own, you can get great video cards in AGP format in the GeForce 6600GT or 6800, with up to 256MB of ram.
I have 6600GT with 128MB of ram and it cost me $119.
Decent Motherboard could be as low as $80
1GB ram for anywhere between 75 and 300 bucks
HDD is going to be the most expensive single piece what ever size you would need.

Reuse the floppy/cdrom from your current dell, save some cash.
A good cash can be from 80 to 150ish bucks, I tend to go with Antec because their powersupplies are the best.

Check out: www.newegg.com and look around at prices, if you have any further questions, feel free to ask here or in a PM.

About the Dell in the link, I don't think it would be that great, because it's an onboard videocard, so it will share system ram, degrading gaming performance.

                    Re: What Desktop?

You will always have lag in some areas. As for that dell system you linked, double the ram at least to 512MB, but the integrated graphics could cause a problem.

BTW ATI cards have seemed in the past to have fewer problems then nVidia cards.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

A link for what? Driver card prices? Desktop specs? You have to be more specific.
