  • Is this up to scratch?

Hi, I've been a FF fan for years and have recently decided to give FFXI a go. However, given how old my PC is, I would have more luck trying to install FFXI on a CD player, therefore I've opted to buy a new laptop. After a long time browsing, I have found an Advent 7090 that suits my needs, I just wanted to know if it would be able to play FFXI at a decent level. The following website gives the specs:

    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/pro...NT/7090/600049

    Cheers.

PS: If this laptop isn't suitable, could anybody please recommend one around the £600 mark that WOULD play FFXI.

    Thanks again!

not sure if the (integrated) intel 915 graphics will run the game.

if it does, it'll probably be crap like all integrated solutions.

    Thanks Yyg!

To be honest FFXI on a laptop isn't very good, you need a good SEPERATE (i.e. not integrated) graphics card, plenty of processing power and at least 1Gb memory to run on the medium setting.

The minimum i'd even try it on would be here http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/nbrange.html?RAZ and thats £762.00 inc VAT. Laptops under £800 hav not been designed to take graphics hungry games and memory intensive games that FFXI is both.

Best advice is its cheaper to buy a barebones PC (like I did) Processor+ memory+PSU+1gb memory+ Decent graphivs card = £450, then buy a monitor (if you don't ahve one already).

Its what i did and I get very good graphics (not the top setting) but good enough and non-laggy. (my spec 2 years old - Athlon 64 3000, 1gb PC3200 memory, 500w psu, Geforce FX5600 graphics card (I have had this for 3 years and its never let me down...... yet... (I ain't jinxing myself! ) plus soundblaster 5.1 sound card, dvd burner and seperate DVD drive (always a must to have 2 drives) and an 120gb HD all for £450 two years ago. you could build that today for about £350 (and thats including VAT!!)

I agree with neighbortaru. This would be a shot in the dark really. It may work just barely or it may not. The graphics card really worries me.

512 ram too is really pushing it too. I just bought an Alienware laptop ($4000+) and I decided on 2gbs of ram. My desktop has 1gb and I'm considering more.

I ran FFXI fine on my PC with 512MB RAM. (Honestly, I'd buy more, but my motherboard has a silly 512MB limit on RAM. That's what I get for getting pre-built.) Although, it sucked back when I had 256MB.

Although if you were talking about 512MB RAM on the laptop, I'd be much more inclined to agree. I don't have any real experience with playing on a laptop, so I definately wouldn't be able to argue from experience. >_>a

Re: Is this up to scratch?

I have an Athlon XP+ 2200, 512 MB PC2700 and an ATI 9600 PRO. I get crystal clear, high rez images without lagging (Only in areas where other people will lag anyway)

This game does not require Pentium XX 50 GHz to run. Even if you had something like that, you're wasting a f*ckton of money. Spending more than $1,000 to run FFXI is just sad, since the game is really old and doesn't require much power to run it at all (Hell, just invest in a PS2 + HDD and a component cable with an HD TV and you'd save money...)

Most lag comes from crappy internat connection or issues with your router. Might want to check that before you go and drop $$$ for a new PC ...

well...I play on a laptop and it runs the game fine...I don't know the specs of my laptop, but it runs the game great as far as I can tell...but as far a a cheaper way to go, yeah desktop...you can get more (mem, etc) for less ($)...
66/55 mph? No problem! Heck, while I'm at it...let's throw in a couple of parking tickets too!!! (Gotta love campus police!)

In your opinion. Some people don't feel its a waste of money to have top notch tech.

Re: Is this up to scratch?

Thanks for the advice. I would have bought a desktop pc but I'm going to uni in September so I wanted to have the moblity of a laptop for taking it there and back etc. Would it be worth it to buy the Advent 7090 and then simply replace the graphics card with a better one? Lol, is this even possible?

                  Thanks again.

Re: Is this up to scratch?

I played FF in a laptop for 1 year.
The graphic is not so good and it lags like hell when places are crowded (like i even can't see all the people around me)
                    Signature, ah!

Re: Is this up to scratch?

you cannot simply replace graphics cards on laptops (at least not yet). Look around, spend a little more and get a laptop with a better graphics card (the cpu, hard drive, ram, etc are all good enough). Look for something with a geforce 6n00 or radeon 9n00/Xn00/X1n00 (n are numbers, ie geforce 6000, radeon 9000, radeon X300, radeon X1300).

Hi again, I've been trying to take your advice into consideration and have found some other laptops, I'd be greatful if you could give me your opinions:

I'm sure there were a few other ones that looked really good but I've cleverly managed to lose all the info about them. Thanks again!

EDIT: Managed to find the other laptops

out of the 4, i'd go for either the 1st (toshiba) or 3rd (acer) one. they should both be fine for running the game.

1st has better graphics card (+). 3rd has more RAM (+) and HD (+) but a weaker graphics card (-).

                          Thanks Yyg!
