  • Graphics go nuts

OK, so I'm playing ffxi and suddenly my graphics go haywire. It doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes it will happen shortly after I start playing, sometimes it happens a long time of playing, and sometimes it doesn't even happen at all no matter how long I've been playing. Any ideas what would cause this? I tried to update my driver, but I have the most recent driver for my video card. It's just a wimpy GeForce4 MX but I played for a long time with no problems at all, now for about the last month I've had the said problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like what my son just went through. After exhausting all other possibilities, we replaced his card with one we had laying around and that was what the problem was. So if you happen to have an old video card laying about, pop her in and see what happens.

          what exactly goes wrong?

ive had my graphics go scrambly on me, like the whole screen was going out of sync and everything turns into wiggle lines. that was due to my lcd dying.

mx isnt that great of a card but it should be more than enough to play fine.

Yeah, it used to play beautifully, but now the graphics get just crazy sometimes. Bits and pieces dissappear, objects get stretched and skewed... and eventually the game freezes or crashes if I don't log out and close to pol to restart fast enough.

that does sound like a video card issue. not sure what but, id hate to have to get another card to fix this issue. try checking your event log to see if theres any system errors.

My old roomate had some sort of problem with his vid card. He would completely lose textures. He was a silhouette of a taru running around. Then (probably non-vidcard related) he could run to zone and run past where it would normally zone you, until he'd run into a black wall. Some pretty weird stuff.
Anyway, he got that Error guard p.o.s. (didn't do crap for my comp) and that cleared up a lot of his problems. (His pc was fairly new, and was built by a friend of his iirc.)

had asimilar problem with an old ati graphics card. i traced the problem back to a driver update issued by windows. when g/f updated windows she updated the graphic cards driver. that then screwed up everything.

so question is. have you updated driver in the last month? sometimes update 4 works better then updates 5-6. or so was the case with my old computer.

other then that, it could be a simple fact your card is showing signs that its on its last leg.

Your card is probably on its last leg. Components fail and there's no guarantee that it will run forever. I remember reading about this in some technical manual for repairing PCs and that on average, a few components on your PC die every month. However, most of the parts aren't integral to the running of your PC (Things like a transister here or a capacitor there) But then, you do get unlucky from time to time and a vital part may get fried, overheated or just simply cease to function.

If your PC is under warranty then you could have it repaired. If this was scratch built or your card a standalone purchase, you should go seek a replacement. Unfortunately, unless you have the skills and tools, you're not able to narrow down your problem in a scratch built PC. If you have friends who can diagnose the problems for you, then have them take a look at it. I wouldn't take your PC to CompUSA or any other retail places because it gets expensive to run diagnostics (Plus they almost always screw up something else and then you're screwed)

cant agree with you more. my built from scrath pcs dont last as long as my g/f's dell. an she abuses the holy hell out of hers. an here i am trying to fix mine every other month. top of the line power supplies dont last, as well as 2 top of the line hard drives. it just seems like evrything lasts a year, an then thats it.

whatever happened to replacing stuff because it became to out of date? now it seems like i replace items just when warranties are up.
