I've got a somewhat unusual situation to handle for a work order as part of earning work hours in my IT class. I've got some very basic Japanese-language skills, and I know how a Japanese keyboard is supposed to work and how to use the IME in Mac OS 8-9, Mac OS X, and Windows 2000/XP. However, I've got a customer who their main language is Japanese and they've bought a computer with US Windows. They want to use a Japanese keyboard with their computer to have the extra buttons to switch modes that they already know how to use.
When I've attached the keyboard to any of the Windows XP computers I have access to, with the Japanese IME enabled, and even just a plain Japanese keyboard layout as an option instead of the IME in the Language Bar, it still behaves as if the keys are mapped to the US layout. I still get the ` mark when pressing the hankaku/zenkaku key. The hiragana/katakana toggle key doesn't do anything either. The fixes I've been able to find with web searches have only turned up solutions for PS/2 keyboards. I also haven't been able to find drivers on the manufacturer's site. The keyboard is an enterbrain USB Compact Keyboard, model number EB-00001. I know the keyboard works properly because all of the keys work properly when I plug it into my Mac running US Mac OS 9 and set the keyboard layout to Japanese.
Does anyone have experience with using a Japanese keyboard with Windows XP rather than using a US keyboard and the IME to input Japanese text? My experience until the past year has mainly only been Mac OS for this type of thing.
