Well, a couple months back I took a shopping spree to Fry's to build a new computer. Cost...? Right around 2k, give or take a couple hundred. Here's what 2k got me three months ago (with as little techno bable as possible...); hopefully it will give you an idea of what to expect in that price range.
Shiney Black Case w/ Spiffy Neon Lighting
Bigger Powersupply than I will ever use
1gb of PC-Something IncrediblyLargeNumber RAM
2.8ghz Pentium-D (64bit, Dual Core, basicly two processors instead of one)
120gb SATA2 Harddrive (No, not Sneak Attacka/Trick Attack, but its just as nifty)
Old style, obnoxiously loud clicking keyboard without extra buttons for useless features
Two webcams, one for Windows XP and the other for XP 64
Windows XP Professional, and Windows XP x64
PCI Express 256mb VRAM Radeon 700 something Pro
An appropriatly overly expensive motherboard to run all that stuff
I used the old DVD, CDRW, and soundcard from my last computer which is now a server. In short, 2k got me a computer that can run multiple copies of FFXI at the same time, with registry hacks, and no lag in Lower Jeuno (except on saturday nights). And I probably won't buy another computer for close to seven or eight years.
