A problem that's been persistant through several hard drive wipes by now, which nobody has been able to figure out yet. I can turn on my computer and start doing whatever without problems. The problem is, after a while things seem to just freeze. FFXI, however, still works like a charm. I suspect that windows explorer might be what's causing the error, though it'd be odd since I've formatted the hard drive several times and still had the problem. Could it be a hard drive error? Does anyone recognize the symptoms?

Re: Explorer-based progs freezing
I've had Explorer crash on me a few times, but it was usually because of something huge that went wrong. There might be something defective with your version of Windows if the problem persists even after several HD wipes. If you downloaded it either buy a legal version or find a more trustworthy source.

Re: Explorer-based progs freezing
Well, display drivers, video codecs, ZoneAlarm, Norton Antivirus and such. Might be something with the video codecs, if anything. At least I trust ZoneAlarm and NortonWe may be human, but we're still animals...

Re: Explorer-based progs freezing
hmm someone that trusts norton??? what spyware cleaners do you have and why are you using IE, its the most bugged browser, download Opera or Mozilla, they are much safer, see if using them gets rid of the crashing problem. also have you got the latest windows update installed on your computer? if you think video card, install the latest drivers from you video card provider (i.e. Nvidia or ATI)

Re: Explorer-based progs freezing
I didn't say I'm using internet explorer, I do use Firefox. However, windows explorer is something you pretty much have to use. As for spyware cleaners, I've got CrapCleaner and Ad-Aware. Also been using ProcessGuard for better program control. We may be human, but we're still animals...

Re: Explorer-based progs freezing
Do you have DSO stop installed? Also I'd advise downloading spybot searcha nd destroy as this pics up things adaware doesn't. I use both + F-secure.
If none of that works, overnight set your hardrive to scan disk and select surface scan, this can take from 4-16 hours dependant on your HD size. Also defrag etc.
other than that, I'm stumped.

Hm, I haven't used DSO stop, but I'll make sure to look it up. Will also try a scan overnight to see if it'll help. And thanksWe may be human, but we're still animals...
