  • Can my system take it?

Hi all, i'm new to the forum and i don't even have ffxi yet!! It's gonna be a christmas present, so to assure myself i could run it on my computer, i tried the benchmark, now i've had some quite varied results from like 2900 to 3800 and i just wanted to ask you guys if you think i could run it easily and what reolution i should play on...

    My system is:
    2.80Ghz
    60GB left over
    1GB of RAM
    Realtek AC’97 Audio
    Intel Pentium 4 CPU
    56k always on modem connection
And an nVidia GeForce video card... but i can't seem to find which one it is....

So what do you guys think, will i be able to run it okay?

Re: Can my system take it?

Your system can have it running 5 times.

    Double Post Edited:
Your connection might lag from time to time though.. Broadband should be a good option.. but it wont hurt much. ^^

Wow thanks but if so, then why are my bench mark outcomes quite low?? It says on squares official website it goes up to like 8000+

Will that only be in highly populated areas, or just generally around?

Re: Can my system take it?

SweetKitty is exagurating it a little bit, more detail on the nVidia graphics card would help. The rest of the specifications says it should run it decently.

Depending on the graphics card you could probably run some weather effects and up lighting effects more, but doubt you could run them at max.

Also as far as FFXI is concerned a connection higher then 56Kbps is only usefull for 1 specific thing, downloading updates. The servers themselves enforce a 56Kbps connection so the guy running on DSL and High Speed Internet is going to have near similar quality as the guy on 56Kbps.

Thing I definatly do not recommend for Game use or last thing I would suggest is Broadband. Broadband is satellite and it works on burst technology, for games burst technology is horrible especially when network is taking a high load burst technology will result in you having a 5 second or even 1 min. delay to other people.

Broadbands strength is download and upload rates but it's streaming ability is just absolute crap.

Agree about the nVidia card thing. Even though maybe i was just being sarcastic, my friend.

But, I've been on Dial-up on several locations for a couple of months. On some locations I d/c-ed every 5 minutes or every hour, at another I got R0 (bad lag) every 5 minutes, and sometimes it worked perfect just like DSL. All dial-ups on the same 56k modem.

Those issues are nothing new with some of the security features windows puts in and other outside possibilities losing connections is nothing new. There was even a small section of time were some R0's that players got were a result of SE not their connection.

Connection loss is not an accurate measure of internet capabilities. Simply because there are thousands of reasons to lose a connection and the amount of data you can recieve a second is none of the reasons. Latency (aka Lag) is one of them as you stated but this is a result of network conjestion, not a direct result from your internet connection.

As for the 56K PCI Modem that is a 56Kbps phone line connection modem not a cable modem. Cable Modem is generally associated with High Speed Internet, whith High Speed Internet max potential speed is 15Mbps (never achieve that speed but can probably reach 14Mbps on an extreemly good situation) but the more common speeds are 3Mbps to about 9Mbps.

Re: Can my system take it?

Graphics card could be a problem if its a low one, I have an Athlon 64 3000 with a Nvidia Geforce FX5600 256mb graphics card, I can still only run the game in medum graphics mode, when my mate sorts his comp out I'll be getting his GT6600 which will allow me to run it full res.

If you have a 64mb graphics card tehn i would say to enjoy the game in reasonable detail you need at least 128mb graphics card.

                    Aha

                    GeForce FX 5600 XT
                    256 MB

                    So medium resolution??

Re: Can my system take it?

Yes, you wont get top res, (at least i don't, though your chip clock speed is higher than mine so who knows) the only difference is the object distance draw means that at a crtain point objects wont be drawn but as you get within a certain distance they appear, it is no problem as I play at this res and the detail is still there, especially all the starlight decorations (SanDoria is so beautiful) From what you are saying, your PC will have no troble playing the game at all and I wish you luck and enjoyment when you install it (though be prepared for 2 hours of update downloads, but its worth it!!)
