I have been using firefox since 0.7, when it was called firebird and the crashes I have had I can count with one hand.

Other thing 1.5 seemed to change is the speed. Installed FF1.5 on my crappy work lappy (400MHz/256MB) because of the tabs and was _really_ suprised when it seemed to run faster than IE.

Though one IE vs FF thing that IE still wins is Memory usage I think.

Re: Internet Explorer vs Mozilla Question

Firefox has the advantage of the safety factor because it is seperated from the operating system. So if a site wanted to exploit a vulnerability, it can only do so much damage as it is not integrated in to the OS so tightly.

IE on the other hand has that issue, which is both blessing (Windows Update) and a curse (adware). Because of the arms-length distance Firefox stands with Windows, any vulnerability with Firefox does not automatically translate to a vulnerability in Windows. With IE on the other hand, the chain is as strong as the weakest link.

My recommendation is to use Firefox for your typical browsing, and leave your IE to trusted browsing only and for Windows Update. But then with the server version of IE.... it is pretty locked down.

The only site I've found that won't work with Firefox is MSN Games. For some reason, it says IE is required, and the games won't work...

Probably meant the IE that comes with windows 2003 server.

It doesn't allow any connection to sites that aren't on trusted list by default. If I recall correctly.

                Secure, and annoying.

                  Try IE 7 Beta.

IE can be just as secure as Firefox in the hands of a knowledgable user, I've never had my computer hijacked by an exploit in IE. There is some site (I forget the link) that showed the exploits are now coming out faster for Firefox per week than IE due the increasing popularity of it.

That being said http://www.maxthon.com is good if you want tabbed browsing and popup blocker. Of course IE 7 beta offers that as well. As long as you don't visit porn websites and warez sites you shouldn't be getting exploits/viruses from IE. I never understood why people thought Firefox was fast, it always seemed slower to me than Maxthon - whether that was loading a page or loading the app itself. Just my experiences.

Like somebody else said, I'm not sure how many things you can exploit in a browser that isn't tied into your operating system, but the popularity and success will draw out the weirdo's. But yea, where are you people going that you'd need the "extra security" of Firefox? >_>

It doesn't matter where you go, we did an experiment on an old laptop, we installed everything, and put IE on, loaded all the latest microsoft updates and then went online with no virus protection or spyware or firewall. We browsed google for simple subjects like building, piling, fire, computers, shampoo, holiday etc and visited random sites from the search.

After 1 hour of browsing, we installed spybot search and destroy and avg. , spybot picked up 34 different pieces of spyware and avg picked up 3 trojens and 2 standard viruses.

we did the same with firefox and only got 1 trojen and 4 pieces of spyware, you do the maths, we then did it with all the secuirty of avg, spybot and zone alarm and got nothing. This just prooves how you need protection even to surf normally, you don't have to visit hack and porn sites to get spyware and virus's. as you can see, firefox may not get rid of everything, but itself without security extras like antivirus, spy ware killer and of course a fire wall, it was miles better than IE for protection. the experiment was carried out 3 weeks ago so is quite recent.

                          IE way to fix things:
                          "Don't watch porn"

It's not the browser that stops the pron and crack sites, its the virus and spyware these sites ALWAYS carry for extra revenue. I don't have to explain that these pornographers and crackers have no qualms exploiting loopholes for money or fame.

Simply, IE is weak at these sites due to weak security, not due to some inbuilt blocking facility. FF is not immune, yet it has far fewer ways to exploit the underlying OS.

Which is what was proved in the experiment we did, that firefox although it did let a trogen and some spyware through, it did stop quite a lot without the extra protection. and note we didn't even visit hack site or porn sites, so thats just noraml queery serach, i'd hate to think if we did visit porn and hack sites what the computer would be infected with. hmmmmmm. experiment 2?

Your expirement was flawed if you picked up so many viruses; it seems you were purposely exposing yourself rather than just "surfing around", and you must have visited some pretty risky sites to find trojans. You would have had to gone to the same exact sites if you wanted an accurate test.

I have a program that specializes in surfing the internet, one that specializes in preventing and destroying viruses, and one that specializes in preventing and destroying spyware. If you have all your bases covered it doesn't make a difference as to what browser you use
