  • Video Card: 7800 or dual 6800?

    Okay, so I'm hopefully getting a new computer in the future, and these are 2 of the video card options i was thinking about:

    256MB Nvidia GeForce 7800 GTX

    Dual 256MB PCI Expressâ„¢ x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) nVidia GeForce 6800

    I'm trying to find out which is better, and if one is better how much of a difference (and what type of differences) you'd see in performance.

    Thanks

    assuming that u r talking about 6800 Ultra, while benchmarks show that 6800 Ultra SLI performs better than 7800 GTX (depending on which benchmarks 7800 GTX does better tho), it's not by the huge amount of difference. the article below seems to cover this issue pretty well;

    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...1833137,00.asp

    however, SLI configuration takes some extra work to make sure it works to its expectation. for the starter, ur mobo obvisouly needs to support SLI, whether it's 2x16 or 2x8 (in other words whether the chipset is NF4 SLI or NF4 SLI x16), and ur pc case needs some good cooling capability. also, the power supply unit must be a good one to supply enough and constant power to both cards. and the bottom line is, SLI technology is still fairly new, and we don't know what could possibly go wrong.

    given the fact that the performance gain u get from 6800 Ultra SLI is not so large compared to a single 7800 GTX card, and that u'll have less to worry about in the hardware setup, i'd personally recommend a single 7800 GTX config out of those 2 choices. not to mention if u were considering 6800 GT SLI, then it's definitely 7800 GTX.

    btw, ATI's X1800 XT is starting to hit the market as we speak, which on many benchmarks has shown better scores than 7800 GTX. unless u r the big fan of NVIDIA, u might wanna consider this option.

      bside, are you indicating that a 256 MB video card is overboard from what FFXI requires from a memory card?

      Would a 128 or 56 MB be sufficient if we were really only considering playing this game online?

      What are other important factors to ensure the game runs smoothly in packed zones, lots of graphics etc?
