  • how can I restore my windows back a couple days?

    Because my DSL has been unusable during the evening, today I got a dial up modem and use it to connect as 56k. After a couple hours, my PC suddenly got infected by tons of adwares and virus, my anti software is warning me every 5 minutes.
    I tried to scan then for now, but I heard you can do a system recovery to make your windows go backward to what it was like days ago?
    How can you do it and will it fix the virus assuming it just started affecting my PC tonight?

    i'm not sure if this would solve ur problem at hand, but here's how;

    Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Recovery
    (some names may not match coz i'm on a JP windows and gussing some of them)

    after that, just follow the instructions given.

      Re: how can I restore my windows back a couple days?

      I'm guessing there's a Windows program now that images your hard drive or something and can create compressed backups? Some manufacturers will pre-install their systems with programs like Norton GoBack which can allow you to restore your old system/hard drives like they were up to years backward.

      Anyways, an easy way to check if you have that capability is usually there will be a separate partition or hard drive that needs to be dedicated to hosting the images for backup. If you don't have one then its possible your images could be corrupted with the same problems you're experiencing(maybe not likely but possible). Alternatively if you're worried about further security I know there's some Linux programs(Ghost in particular) that will allow you to backup your hard disks/partitions in a compressed image then automatically upload it via ftp to the system of your choice. There's probably a windows equivalent and in this age of trojans and virii it may be something to think about if you're interested in backing up your system further.

      Although all that may be unneccesarry, a couple programs I suggest to every Windows user are Spyware Search and Destroy and Spyware Blaster. You'll probably only need one of those but they are both free and both are kept up-to-date very easily. You'll be surprised how much faster your system will run after removing all the derilect processes that may be spyware/spamware. Good luck getting your system back up to par, I know how frustrating it can be!

      edit: After taking another look at your post, also a little worried you may have a deeper security issue at hand. Do you have any software/hardware firewall that's protecting your DSL and not your dial up modem connection that could be the issue here? Cause that would seem to be the case and doing a system backup while still connected to the open connection may just result in further "infection."

          hm for some reason I checked my dialup setting and the firewall isn't ticked. I guess that was why ><

          Some of my friends told me it won't fix the virus because windows will only restore resigtries. So I already format my hard drive and finished installing windows. But I got really frustrating because my creative soundcard wasn't working at first... for like an hour I tried to get it to work. And the solution was so stupid.

          When I install it, I insert the CD that came with the card and let the auto run application did their things. No sound. No matter how much I try to reinstall, update drivers, etc, no sound.
          I then uninstall all softwares that come with the CD and force the driver to update myself in the device manager and it works -_-'' GJ creative.

            I don't think Windows System Restore would rid you of the virus. You minus well completely erase the Hard Drive, IMO.
