Re: What does Santa want in video cards?

I wouldn't spend cheaply on a video-card, my electronic philisophy is "You pay for what you get". But then again, I wouldn't pay 400$ for at op of the line either, I'm ok with my 9800 pro ^^

...the non-free drivers don't cost money. They cost your soul! (j/k)

Proprietary drivers are just a pain I don't want to deal with, really. And no one wants to support a tainted kernel. But all of my hardware tends to be budget. My new computer came from a thrift store on a 50% volunteer discount ($65 for a 1.3GHz Athlon w/ 256MB), my Radeon 8500 was ordered online for $60 (and the R128 from earlier was clearanced for $40). My sound card is a SoundBlaster Live! from the same thrift store on the same discount ($5). I tend to make up for lack of financial investment in hardware by investing effort in software. My server is still going strong on a 166MHz Pentium-MMX processor that's about 8 years old now. I've custom-built the OS using GNU/Linux and the LFS book so that it doesn't contain unnecessary extras to slow the system down or produce security vulnerabilities. (Time has often been more plentiful than money, in my case...)

Now, in Windows, you'll be using proprietary drivers anyway, so it doesn't matter so much. But if you use GNU/Linux at all, trust me, it is much easier to use hardware with free drivers in most cases than those with only proprietary drivers. Hence my leaning toward ATI at the time I bought my cards...

Well, I finally nearly have enough money ($400) to buy m'self an nVidia GeForce 7800GTX video card. Actually, my birthday is just around the corner and expecting to get lots of cash so I'll be buying it for a late-birthday present. Thanks yall for your help though.
