  • What does Santa want in video cards?

Santa Clause is one for a great video card in his PC. He already has plans to upgrade the motherboard to dual-process so he is looking in a new video card as well. Which should Santa get?

The nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX or the ATI Radeon x850? I want to play Act of War: Direct Action on my computer (which requres shader-compatible video card or whatever) and other games of course. So, if I want the best... which of the two should Santa get? No need for essays, BUT Santa would like at least reasonable replies involving an analysis or whatnot on why or why not to get the one over the other?

I'm 3dFX biased....... oh wait.... so yeah, go with nVidia.

ATI burned me, and I refuse to go with ATI. I purchased an ATI All-in-wonder card and in less than 1.5 years, they refused to make a driver for Windows 2000 (back then) so I have a dead video card that can only do regular video and could not use the other functions.

Also, I feel that ATI video cards are overpriced for their relative performance with an nVidia card.

What about nVidia paying off 3Dmark ?

Well I did pose this question on other forums. So far, I am leaning to nVidia right now.

            Just to update...

Trust me. With the SLI thing, I would surely get two nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX cards if I had the money. Who knows, the price of it could come down around Christmas time-and probably will-letting me get two of them.

my advice, wait until the games come out and the HW sites start benching it with the cards.

                  Thanks Yyg!

Re: What does Santa want in video cards?

I lean toward ATI, but that's mainly because ATI let enough of the specs be known for free software drivers to be written. But I've heard that they're available for nVidia cards as well, now.

Wish I could offer more specific insight, but I buy everything on a tight budget. My first decent (not ACS clearance-bin generic) video card was actually an ATI Rage 128 Pro based card on clearance at Best Buy (PCI), which served well enough when my 166MHz Socket 7 box was doing both server and desktop duties. Now I've got a Radeon 8500, which is old, but runs FFXI decently on my new desktop. And X11R6.8.x support for it is pretty painless to set up. (Dual boot system - don't have cedega, and from what I've heard cedega can't run FFXI well yet...)

Most games I want for PC already are out or about to come out and I already have Act of War: Direct Action... so I don't quite see what you're saying.

Lunaryn - I admit I don't have much money-if any-since I currently have a job. However I always held a philosophy that if I can pay over $500.00 for something, I sure in hell have enough money to pay $50.00 for something to go with it. So, even if I have to get drivers that cost me a bit-that doesn't affect my buying decision one bit. But thanks for the tip.

If that's that case, then just hit up all the HW sites you can find to see if they benchmarked your game. Have Santa get whatever card that you can afford that benches highest on those games.

                        Thanks Yyg!

LOL This reminded me of an incident recently. My elderly mother wanted a new car. We took her to look at some and she saw a little red job that she totally fell in love with. I laughed because it seemed a bit too sporty for her but she used the "This will probably be the last car I ever buy before I die so let me get what I want." comment. (Note: I've heard this with the last 3 cars she bought! LOL) So she's customizing it with the dealer and she passes on a $1000.00 option. I asked her why she was worried about a $1000.00 option on a $40,000+ car!! It improves the resale value and while you have the car you get the extra enjoyment of it. (It was for burled walnut accents.)

I agree, when you go for top of the line stuff and you might have to pay just a bit more for something extra, you might as well go all the way. I have too many regrets from not doing that in the past so I won't make that mistake again!

Santa's question now remains, what do you mean by HW sites?

TheGrandMom-that's exactly what my philosophy is.
