  • Bandwidth Limiter

    Hi

Recently I've been having problems with me and my dad over the issue of me lagging while he is downloading stuff on a cable connection. Later, I found out something about bandwidth limiting or something like that, but all the software is only a 30 day trial period and the ones that are free keep ending up as dead links ( pursuading my parents to buy it doesn't seem to be working and my wallet is already being squeezed by the cable connection and FFXI monthly pay). So does anyone know of where I could get a bandwidth limiting program or something please? Thanks a ton for all the help

I'm assuming you're using a router of some kind. Whether it's a linksys type deal, or a PC running Internet Connection sharing.

Either way, there ~should~ be some options within that gateway to limit speeds to any number of protocols or IPs. It's just an issue of adding a rule to the firewall.

I've used BSD server for my gateway for years. I can, and have in some instances limited the bandwidth to some machines. (An annoying neighbor tried to take advantage of my high speed connection, always dropping by with is laptop asking to plug in "real quick." So I limited his downloads to just over 56k. After about 3 days he stopped coming over. hehee "Dunno dude, maybe something's going on with the cable provider.") For me it was just a matter of a few lines in the config file.

I'd like to think that there's something like that any number of hardware firewalls from a number of vendors. Just check their websites, or slap Google around for a bit to find them. As far as software. The connection sharing/firewall software should support this. At least it has in all the instances I've used. (Of course using BSD, the software was all free under their myriad of software liscenses.)

Well we have a Linksys Router and both computers are connected to it and the Route is connected to the Modem.

How would I access this gateway thing and what is BSD?

Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate the help.
