I'm in a group project for my operating systems class at ITT, and I just need some insight. We're supposed to use the internet for this project, and I really could use some help as to where to turn, because the internet is so cluttered with useless information that it's hard to find exactly what I'm looking for. Also, unfortunately, i'm the only one in my group who really seems to know ANYTHING about computers, and the rest of them are pretty stupid, so it's all up to me. I know if I do all the work, they'll still get good grades, but I just want a good grade myself.
Anyway, this project is broken up into 2 parts. The first part sounds easy enough, but I still need some help on where to turn. I know quite a bit about computers, but I am clueless about servers. The purpose of this question is to figure out what kind of server would be the best to use for a book store opening up a website to sell items. Software is not important, it's about the hardware. I've looked up lots of servers, but it's real hard to actually find some concrete information as to what type of servers are good for what! I've look at a few dell servers, and HP servers, and they list all the tech information, but they really dont tell me anything that helps me understand what they'd be best for. Also, what type of computer are servers? are they mainframes or minicomputers, none of these sites I've visited really say. I used to think they were mainframes, now I'm not so sure.
Next part of the assignment doesn't sound too hard. I gotta find a type of computer for a large bank to use for coporate banking and investment needs. Needs to store alot of information, and provide central management. Plus only terminals need be connected to it, not other PCs.
I'm not looking for answers on this stuff or anything, but maybe a point in the right direction. A site or something that really might help out, cause you try searching for this stuff on google, or even pricewatch, and you get more results than you can think of ><
