  • GeForce 6800 GT

I got the Geforce 6800 GT 256mb card.

It does everything it claims. Mine came with a free copy of FarCry and i have never in my life seen a game run so smoothly and beautifully in my life... the game it self it pretty fun and challanging too.

The lighting effects are fantastic.. i came to a room with a busted pipe spewing steam and when it passed threw the near by light i could see the shadows running threw it and i was just awed.

All those bench marks are neat but until you SEE it you just can't get it, i was a little wary of it at first but damn that was worth it.

Oh, and the water MY GOD... it made me want to go swimming it was so nice.

Best of all, no matter how many baddies or how far out i can see, it doesn't lag once... and everything is set to ultra high.

    I can't wait for Doom 3 Aug 5.

Oh and you ATI people out there, since the new x800 series is also damn close to this, i'd imagine this goes for that set of cards as well. (See not everyone has to hate one card over another) The only reason i picked the GT over a x800 pro was the GT had 16 pipelines and was using pixel shader 3.0.

if you could get us some sys specs + benches that would be nice.

thing i don't like about 6800 is it's double thickness (doesn't matter for true gamers who don't use first pci slot anyway, but my comp is overflowing with pci so i need every slot i can get). according to the specs, the x800 is better by a bit in overall power, but does lack ps 3.0 (it's not as ugly looking also  )

as for x800, im sure there are software/hardware hacks available already to remove the 12/16 pipeline block (like getting 8 pipes on 9800 se instead of the 4)

PS 3.0 isnt used by any games right now and more then likely wont for the next couple months. Both the 6800 and x800 run 16 Pipelines. Both cards are so close in performance, its going to be down to the developers to make the difference. Doom III runs better on the 6800, and HL2 runs better on x800.

I would go Ati for the fact that I save one PCI slot. Nvidia needs to change the way they cool there Cards. One reason is that fact that you need to run a 480 Watt PS to run the 6800 at its best. You lay down $400-500 you shouldnt need to replace your current PS.

True, luckily i already have a 550 watt supply.

And i believe FarCry uses pixel shader 3.0... and the shading i saw i would have to say it does. also EQ2 will use it and i am getting that game and of course Doom 3.

FFXI is a DX8 game. It will look the same on my GF4 ti as your GF 6800.

I'm on and AMD Athlon Xp 2400+ with 1 gig ddr ram. I don't really have any benchmarks.. but it's very pretty.
Unless your overclocked a ton, that CPU is your bottelneck. HL2 and D3 will really stress it out.

Doom III runs better on the 6800, and HL2 runs better on x800.
HL2 isn't out yet, how can you know?

Nvidia reccomends a 380 watt PS for the 6800 Ultra. the GT has much less power requirements. If your going to dish out $500+ for a video card alone, the rest of your system should be really geat too. Including the PS, which would be plenty more than 380 watts.

And i believe FarCry uses pixel shader 3.0... and the shading i saw i would have to say it does.
PS 3.0/SMC 3.0 doesn't look any different from 2.0. It's just an optimized version that runs faster.

For FFXI though, a Radeon 9800 pro is more than enough. Any more and it's a waste.

              Isn't Doom OpenGL and HL2 Direct3D?

That and Doom3 uses lots of stencil shadows. The GF6800's can run as 32x0 to run then great.

Yeah, but i don't play FFXI anymore.. the group thing got annoying which was a shame cause i liked the rest of it.

I got it for future games like Doom and HL but mostly for EQ2.

www.anadtech.com has some incredible reviews on, well..., everything with computer hardware. Here is an awsome unbiased review/cost per performance increase comparrison of the latest cards. Personnally the 6800 GT is has the most bang for the buck from what I see. Though both ATI and NVidia have better cards. Cost per performance increase just isn't there.

One thing to point out in this discussion is that the double-thickness issue only applies to the 6800 Ultra. The 6800 GT (the subject of the topic) is a single-slot solution.

dude, change that.... FFXI is DX8. it will look better on 6800 due to two things. one is that 6800 is much faster and will have less video lag than gf4 (talking about high rez+all the goodies in a place like bastok market ah at jap high time, there you will see a difference, though there will still be lag)

stormfalcon, being single slot doesn't change the fact it's ugly:sweat: :spin:

LOL... any of those cards maxed out the bench.

oops, that was a typo. But if you look at a still picture, they will be the same.

that depends on what you set it to. if you use 16xaf and 4x aa, im sure it would look better on a newer card than old (who's going to put aa and af on if it will make you have 2fps?). not to mention that you can use hkey hacks to increase rez even higher (not recomended for lower cards).

who would look at quality based on a single frame anyway? in games, preformance and quality are linked cuz pretty looking frames at 1fps looks worse than 75% quality frames at 20fps.

AA doesn't work in FFXI, nVidia or ATi. With the Forceware drivers, forget when it started, but textures can go up to 4048x4048. Ati's only go up to 4048x2024, IIRC.
