Will this PC play FFXI?

Ok, I am a college student and I really want to play FFXI but do not have a ton of money to spend on a awsome pc. Here is what I have.

Intel AMD Socket A ATX Motherboard ATA-100,

Advanced 4 AGP 32MB 4X AGP VIDEO ONBOARD

64BIT PCI SOUND ONBOARD

Windows 98 SE

56K V.90 AMR MODEM w/ Intel Chipset

1.44MB PANASONIC FLOPPY DRIVE

PHILLIPS 8x4x32 CDRW DRIVE

10X TOSHIBA DVD-ROM DRIVE

20GB ULTRA 100 HARD DRIVE

256MB SDRAM PC133

10/100 Mbps LAN Onboard

Super Duty Socket A COOLING FAN & HEATSINK

SUPER MID-ATX TOWER CASE

2 USB PORTS ONBOARD

300WATT+ POWER SUPPLY

Also I have a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 Graphics card to install on this PC.

Will this set-up play the game? If not what else do I need minimum to play? I am not super good with computers so please use normal terms

I also have the GeForce 2 MX 400/440.
You will want to turn down some of the settings in terms of video.

Yes, your system will support FFXI, but not by much

You have the recommeneded amount of RAM : 256 MB, but be sure you close most of your programs in the background.

I'm not sure how Windows 98 will affect it, but Windows XP is recommended.

Check to make sure your sound card is compatible with Direct X 8.1.
I prolly have the oldest sound card and it works fine [old old Soundblaster live!]

I'm concerned about your hard disk though. You only have 20 GB and FFXI takes up 6GB before updates.

If you don't have over 55% of your drive used, you can go ahead and install it, but much more than this and it will slow your system and you won't be able to defragment your drive.

HDDs are getting cheap.
I just bought a 120 GB HDD for $70 from Best Buy after rebates.

Other than that, it looks good to me!

The hardrive should be fine, I have a labtop I do most comter related things on this new pc is strictly for ffxi for the time being.

But, the specs on my pc say 300+ power supply. I know most graphics cards require 350 watt power supplys. Is this true? and if mine does not infact have a 350 watt power supply is this easily upgradable? I just buy a new power supply and install it etc?

Correct.

Power supply will run $60 for a cheap one, which is not always good.

Sometimes with the cheap ones, the power will fluctuate, not good for the electronics.

They are simple to install if you know how many connections are needed and how to take the case apart.

don't bother upgrading psu... i have a ati 9600xt running in with a standard dell 250watt psu + 4 pci cards + a 16x dvd+4x4 dvd burner+ a 7200rpm hdd..... no problems here...


anyway, a cheap psu can cost as little as $20, and 60 can buy you a decent psu (not best, but good enough for even a 9800)

NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER Buy a cheap Power Supply. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS buy a brand name like Antec or Thermaltake. I'm speaking from experience.
