  • Radeon 9600 XT question

In one week im getting the Radeon 9600 XT along with an Asus p4p800 deluxe and I heard about some problems with the video card. Will it work fine with FFXI?

    Thanks in advance

I'm not sure, but what "problems" have you heard about?

Well, It doesn't have to be exactly the Radeon 9600 XT, but I've heard from some people that their computer freezes or crashes with the Radeon 9600 (not sure if XT or Pro).
Also a guy told me that the Radeon 9600 XT wasn't on the list of "Recommended Video Cards" so I began to have doubts.

I hope there are no problems like that on the game.

Well, the reason it's not there is because it (the XT line) has just recently been released within the last month or four. And just because it isn't on the "Recommended Video Card" list doesn't mean it's not a good card. It's better than all FX cards but the 5950 for most games (cept the high poly, non FSAA games like UT2k3 and RtCW: ET). And that whole crash thing just means they set up their comp wrong. If it was a major problem, it would have been addressed in one of the drivers and if that didn't fix it, the cards would have been pulled from production.

Oh, so probably the problem is not the video card but the configurations. Thanks again for the advice.

One more question, is the Asus P4P800 deluxe a good motherboard to combine with the Radeon 9600?(It will have a Pentium 4 2.8ghz with 512 DDR ram) Im getting them soon and I would like to know if I made the right choice.

Alot of people complain about 9600's crashing because they dont have updated drivers. Yes your mobo is good. Its an ASUS, afterall.

yeah, its an Asus. The only problem is my hard drive, im not sure if it's good or not. Its a Maxtor 60GB 7200 rpm

Maxtors are very reliable (specially if your'e modding an XBox lol, but that's another story haha). And the size is fine. That's standard speed, so dont' worry 'bout that. But does it have an 8 mb cache? if not oh well, if so yay ^_^

Yeah I have a seagate 120 gig with 8mb cache and its excellent.

                    8mb caches are the best!

if you want a better hdd (as long as your mobo has sata capabilities), go sata and the disk will run even better (a lot faster + good for hdd arrays)

I dont quite get what you mean by "took over" (perhaps you mean started posting the most frequently), but yes, this is the only FFXI name ive ever had.

I don't know too much about computers so im not sure if it has that 8 mb cache.
                            What does it do?

Cache is where, when something tries to access data on the hard drive platters (the actual storage units to which the data is stored), data is placed in hopes that the data will be used again soon. And because memory is faster than a HDD (by far), this is suppose to help increase performance. But it also depends on the efficiency of the algorithms governing the cache lol. So of course, if more info can be stored (thus an 8 mb cache over 2), less acess will have to be drawn from teh physical harddrive itself, speeding everything up ^_^
