    1. Start Menu
    2. Settings - Control Panel
    3. Administrative Tools (If you don't see it, It's under "Performance and Maintenance")
    4. (Double-Click) Services shortcut (Services Window should show up)
    5. Scroll down and look for "Messanger" (Right-Click & Select Properties) (Messanger Properties Window should show up)
    6. Startup Type: (Select "Disabled")
    7. Click "STOP" button
    8. Click "APPLY"
    9. Exit all windows

    Pritty much it....
    hehe..

While you are at it you might want to turn off some other XP crap you don't need.

I found this page when I first got XP PRo.

      http://www.beemerworld.com/tips/servicesxp.htm

It was a lot of help to me. Essentially, if I did not know what something was I set it to manual or if I knew for sure I did not want it, like messenger, I disabled it. If in doubt, put something on manual and it will only run if it has to (but disable messenger for sure, it is completly and totally evil.)

This is good for gaming because you don't have all this crud you never use running.

a much easier way of doing the same thing is to go to run->services.msc->messanger [right click]-> stop-> disable

isn't that easier by two steps?????
