  • Maxtor 80 GB Hard Drive

I just bought a Maxtor 80GB Hard Drive from Best Buy. The box was partionally dented on a corner, but I still decided to buy it anyway. What are the chances there is something wrong with it?

I also have another concern. On the side of the box it says:

"Look for the Maxtor logo on the shrik-wrap of this package to ensure product authenticity"

I don't see a logo on the shrink-wrap. I see it on the Hard Drive itself. Does anyone have any ideas if the logo is actually supposed to be on the shrink-wrap?

Never Mind that last statement about the symbol on the plastic. It was on the box plastic, not the hard drive. I was a little confused there.

Me and my friend tore up his brand new HDD, scratched, beaten dropped, you name it (its a long story) and it still worked. I cant speak in complete assurity, but id assume that it'll work...

Original hard drives had like zero shock (as in jarring, bump, etc) tolerance. A shock could screw sectors and what not, possibly the whole drive.

These days, they are built to withstand pretty huge bumps. A little dent on the corner probably won't do anything.

Best thing is to take it out and try it, run a check on the drive, etc.
If it checks out okay its fine.

OK, thanks. Yeah, I was wondering how I would know if it was broken, but I guess that it just won't read it. Thanks for your info Aniedi. As for Heretic......Why exactly would you destroy a perfectly good Hard Drive just to see if it would work after it was beaten, stomped on, and thrown all over the place???? Did you run over it with a car too?

            It wasnt intentional... "exactly"

Basically we dropped it down some stairs, some very long stairs and it got pretty hammered.

Oh, and as I said, it wasnt destroyed, as it still worked! ^^
