  • Notebook memory

Ok, i'm going to be upgrading my notebook memory. I have 256mb DDR pc2100 and i can expand it too 1gb .

What i'm planning on doing is buying a 512mb stick and putting it in the one available slot. What i've heard is that having 2 256mb sticks is more efficient then 1 stick of 512mb.

    So my question is:
    Is having 1 256mb stick & 1 512mb stick better than having 2 256mb sticks?

Thanks, also keep in mind the upgrade factor, if i buy two sticks of 256mb ram then if i ever wanted to max it out to 1gb ram i'd have to buy 2 512mb sticks, and those 256 would be useless, just backups incase i fry the 512s.

So what i think is best is to buy a 512 stick and have 768mb ram, and then if i wanted to upgrade it to 1gb i'd just take the 1 256mb stick out and sell it, then buy only 1 more 512mb stick

    ...phew

    Anyhow, thanks for your help.

the two sticks of 256 is only more efficient if your motherboard is running in duel channel memory mode. As I i really don't know much about notebooks i can't say for sure but I'm willing to bet your notebook doesn't run in duel channel mode. If you can find out one way or the other you should go 2 sticks of 256 from same company, same model of ram, as close as you can get it to the other chip. If you know its not duel channel (which i'm betting it's not) then you can do whatever you want with the ram.

thanks for taking your time to respond, but

I'm going to base my decision on the upgrade factor. Even having 2 sticks of 256 will only amount to 512. So i can spend a little more money and buy a 512 stick, then have an overall total of 768mb of ram. Then when windows decide to use even more ram, i can just toss the one 256 stick and slap in another 512. Then have it maxed

That would work better in my opinion.
