  • Bad framerate. My comp should be fine, whats wrong?

For some reason I get a really bad framerate in towns and some regons (only Dangruf wadi so far). I've messed with all the FFXI settings, both in game and out, and it makes no difference no matter what. I've messed with video card settings changing it to high preformance, turning of FSAA and all that... no difference, installed latest nVidia driver (52.16)... no difference.

    Comp Specs:
Video Card: Jaton Crop. Generic nVidia Geforce4 Ti 4200 128MB AGP 8X
    512MB DDR Ram
60GB approx. HD (installed on a 47GB Partition)
    Windows XP
    Integrated Sound (SoundMAX)
    Proccessor: Pentium 4 2Ghz
    Manufacturer: Dell

    Thanks,

    Also need help

Well I think it's the video card drivers. I read the driver documentation and noticed the following in the “Open Issues” section of the document.

"Windows XP: Antialiasing doesn't appear to be working in Final Fantasy XI benchmark.
This is a known issue with the application. NVIDIA is working with the developer to address it."

I am hoping a future nVidia driver fixes this issue. Has anyone found a driver version that runs FF XI better?

As a reference I have the following system specs and also get massive "lag"

Windows XP Professional: Service Pack 1
    Microsoft Direct X 9.0b

    Asus A7V8X motherboard – BIOS version 1010
Via Hyperion 4 in 1 drivers version 4.49
    Athlon XP 2400
512 MB PC 2700 DDR Ram
MSI GeForce 4 ti 4400 (128 MB DDR ram) – nVidia ForceWare driver version 52.16 (Released Oct. 23, 2003)

I've tried the MSI Drivers version 44.25 and the latest 52.16 nVidia drivers and both give me massive lag. I've read in a post somewhere that the 40.03 drivers were supposed to be pretty fast so maybe those would work better. I haven't managed to find them anywhere to test them out though.

Perhaps you should try turning off Anti-aliasing and antistropic filtering. It might help reduce the problem, but I've had too much school work to test if that solved my problem.

Thats simple, get the 43.xx drivers for it, and it runs like a dream. I have a GF FX 5900, and my gf has a Ti 4200 and hers practically reaches my performance, sad =p.

Anywho, you can get those drivers at the omega website, or you can look around. They are the best drivers for the Ti Series i believe.

my 64mb ti 4200 has stable framerates, wiether in the wadi, or next to AH in bastok around 7 EST (that is about 40-80 people right there+6 NPC, 20-40 max onscreen though). im guessing the problem either lies in the 2 gh p4 (that is wilmate right?), or that generic ti 4800 (4800 by itself is a joke).

as for the drivers, i suggest the 45.23 fx detonator. it's the fastest ive had, although quality is a bit lower (i now use forceware with 1200x1024 overlay, 1024x1024 background, it ownes in quality )

what connection do you have? that may lead to some lag (some people believe lag is lag, and can't tell the difference from video/ connection lag)

          Lag vs. Lag

Well I am not sure what is causing the lag really. I have a comcast cable modem so I don't think it is my internet connection. I have heard of people running this game with no lag, on dial-up, with lower specs than I have. So I don't really know what's going on.

I tried the 45.xx, 43.xx, and 52.xx drivers and all of them seem to get this lag issue. About every 1-10 minutes my game lags for 1-10 seconds or so. My connection rate drops to 70%, and the R drops to a dead 0. The S is almost always about a 50-300. The S is usually 100-200. The R is usually 100-300 when the game is running stable, however it has gone anywhere from 0-1000. If it helps my character still fights, deals damage, etc. I just don't see what's going on until after it happens... sometimes much later, sometimes not at all. For example, I saw myself do a 7 hit combo, without ever using the "Combo" ability. -.-' I lagged out and then the animations came out super fast. It looked quite awesome, but I know it was only because of the lag. >.<

Perhaps someone can tell me what is causing this issue? In the FF XI config, I turned off mip and bump mapping features. I also put all textures to maximum compression. I run FF XI in 1024 X 768 overlay with 1024 X 1024 background. I turned off Anti-aliasing and Antistropic filtering in my nVidia desktop. I also changed my settings to high performance in the nvidia desktop. In game, I turned off weather effects and shadows to try and make it run better.

I scored over 3100 in High Res on the benchmark 2 program, so I figured my machine could handle the game fine in high res. If it would just stop "lagging" everything would be perfect. ^.^ So anyone have any ideas as to how I can fix this? Maybe I should enable mip mapping and/or turn off compression? Overclock my card to its maximum...?

I am hoping when new drivers are released it will fix this problem, but until then I want to find the best possible settings I can actually play the game at. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

MY problem is not related to connection lag at all. I have DSL and connection is always at 100%. the framerate is constant too, except in towns where it somtimes freezes for about a second, and then goes back to just being really bad whenever somone appears.
