  • how would this setup run?

Im new to the computer building thing, the only computer i have owned before was store bought when i was young. I have done a lot of research and have come up with a pretty in depth outline of what i wanted for a setup Everything is from newegg. com im trying to keep the price under 850$ if possible, i dont really have any preconceived biases i just want a pretty good computer that will still be decent for a long time.

I still dont know what kind of Ram to get. Probably 1 stick of 512 mb ram but im not sure which type so any suggestions would help.

I have chosen an AMD system because its cheaper and pretty good for games but i dunno if you think i shoudl swtich to intel lemme know why. Im felxible =)

    Setup-

    Processor-AMD ATHLON XP 3000 "Barton" 400MHz FSB

    motherboard- ASUS A7N8X-X Supported CPU:AMD® Athlon™XP/ Athlon™/ Duron™ 600MHz ~ 3000+
    Chipset:Nvidia nForce2 400 + nForce2 MCP
    FSB:400 / 333 / 266 / 200 MHz
    RAM:3 x 184-pin DDR 400 PC3200,2700,2100,1600 up to 3GB

Video Card- POWERCOLOR ATI RADEON 9600 PRO 128MB

Hardrive- (I dont know a lot about harddrives but i dont use all that much space really) WD WESTERN DIGITAL EIDE HARD DRIVE 40GB 7200RPM

cd rom drive- (I also dont know a lot about this) TOSHIBA 16X DVD-ROM Model SD-M1712

I was looking at corsair memory but im not sure if that would be the best choice- prolly pc3200 that can run consitent with th 400 FSB that my processor has. any suggestions would be great.

Also i am getting windows XP professional

I have my own keyboard and mouse, so i still need a case and wires and fans?? if im missing somehting big lemme know =) thanks in advance for your help!

Its weird. I m in the same exact boat as you. i have the same budget aswell and im going with AMD.

I would go withe the 2500 barton. Its very easy to OC it to 3200 speed.

      that sounds good.

An itel system is VERY expensive.. compared to a AMD system, but MUCH more powerfull, well kinda....

But get a NF7-S from abit.. you'll have a lot less troubles, but not free from troubles, the NF7-S has some divider issues, but if you not OCing you shouldnt have to worry about it. The board you picked out is its ASUS counterpart, its good, but alot of people have had various problems with it, rangeing from multiplyer probs to agp probs, plus i dont think you can lock the AGP/PCI with it...

As for ram, get two sticks of 256. that way you can get dual channel and run alot faster. OCZ makes the best ram out there, although many in my community would argue, but I think not. Corsair hasnt been doing very well with their pc4000 models, but with their 3200 its hella ocable.

Like Sanada said go with the Barton 2500+. Most 2500 can OC to 3200 speeds, but if you want to do that get a slk-947u or slk-900u heatsinks from thermalright, then get a ThermalTake SMart Fan II, that should be very good setup for cheap.

As for HDD, you got serial ATA use it. Buy either two 80gig HDD and raid stripe em 0, or just buy one 120gig HDD if you dont know or dont want to try raid.... but RAID SATA is very fast... ill make a list at newegg for you...

There is a cheap sony CD-RW/DVD combo drive for 50bucks. get that. I have it, and it rocks.

      Good vid card choice.

      Monitor?

Ill show you a good case. THat is the case i have, and it mucho rockso.

      $764 with monitor

*edit* Oh yeah, I didnt include the OS, but if your smart you can find out why, you dont have to spend 150 on the OS, matter of fact you shouldn't, but I leave that to you to figure out. *edit*

Wow thanks for all the help everyone. I was going to get a barton 2500+ in the firs place but the problem is i dont really know anything about overclocking..... how do i do it? is it very difficult to learn. Is it worth it to get 2500+ amd learn to overclock it or shoudl i just get another processor.

Also i have another question. My parents want a new computer for themselves which they said i could use until i go to college when i get my own. unfortunately it would have to be through my dads business which has a specific busines modeal for dell's and gateway's. Im not sure what setup theyre buying, but iun general would dell's and gateway's be able to run the game? i know they wouldent be that great but woud they be able to run it with their junky on board 64 mb graphics and 256/512 ram? also can i upgrade these two types of computers? like add a new video card or does dell and gateway not allow for upgrading

          Ok...Here is my 2 cents

If you want a computer that will last a long time, go Intel
If you want a computer that is cheaper but will not last as long and creates much more heat, go AMD

I have a AMD and although I have 6 fans in my computer it still runs at about 120 Degrees F (when I am starting a game)

When I am playing a game like FFXI it runs at ~130
When I am just doing homework and such ~110

I would recommend going with a Intel P4 if you have the $$$.
If not then seriously think about buying a heaksink/fan for the processor, it is not that expensive and will increase the life of the chip.

          Onto Hard drives now...

Since the prices have gone down for 80GB models I would recommend getting one, sure you could go try RAID but I don't feel that I need it so it is personal preference.

This is all about budget now, if I had the money I would get a 9700np (non-pro) and then use the tutorial on the site here to make it a 9700Pro.

Also think about cooling in your system, if you have a good system with fans and it is kept un-cluttered it will run much cooler and everything will last longer.

Good luck with the new computer

Here are my thoughts on my Dell PC:

I can't OC it - the mobo gets 'neutered' @ dell (I guess), so if you're going dell, make sure to get something that's as powerful as you need. I got a dimension 4550 w/ intel 2.6 cpu. I bought a 9600pro, which I put some ramsinks on, and I have 768 mg/ram.

I run ffxi @ the highest resolution, with all of the setting pumped up, and I haven't had any problems yet (a little slowdown in the fog/mist).

So... I like my dell - it's not the PC I'm going to show off to my friends, but until I can afford to build a nice watercooled dual-xeon system, it'll do for me just fine.

Sha right, the only HSF better than the stock for intel is sp-94, or any thermalright. 50 smackers buddy. 50.

f you want a computer that is cheaper but will not last as long and creates much more heat, go AMD
Dood don't knock the Athlon XPs, some of those athlons can run circles around any intel rig... im not talking about the 64's either. I've seen some hit more than 23k on the benchies. plus 34 bucks for the SLK-900u or 947u whatever you want. and no more heat probs.

You know how many people have fucked up their 9700np, and couldn't RMA it? Hundreds, its not something i recommend to a newbie, or at very least some one who isnt confident to do that sort of thing. Plus the mod doesnt always work, some of them just simply dont have a quality 8 pipes, thats why its a np. Course if you up for a challenge, but its not gaurentted.
