  • AEROBAHN, help me with a gay win98 problem

my sister, like the idiot she is, screwed up the connection for my other comp. that comp is a p2 running win 98 (non-se), and uses wired lan for connection to internet. now that comp won't recognize it is on lan, even if the router does. so far i can't find a way to connect it...

    any suggestions?

I realize that the post said Aerobahn but since it is posted here it seems like fair game to me - ignore this post if you want to and I apologize if any of my suggestions are insultingly obvious.

      1. on the PC NIC, are you getting a solid link light and when you reboot does the activity light flicker?

      2. Are you able to get an IP (assuming you are using DHCP)? Win 98 is reaching back a bit but I assume it still lets you access ipconfig or winipconfig via a command prompt. when you ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew do you get an IP?

      3. When you go to Control Panel -> Network is TCPIP listed for your NIC and configured properly with DHCP, etc? I am not sure but file and printer sharing may also have to be selected (though I doubt it).

      4. Are there any conflicts in Device Manager?

      5. Is the router configured correctly and running the firmware most appropriate to Win 98? (hard to be more specific without knowing the router).

      6. Are other computers able to see the router and the internet (assume so since you posted - duh)?

      7. If you bypass the router and hook the PC directly into the modem are there any problems?

      8. If everything looks good you might try the following...
      http://www.experts-exchange.com/Oper..._20685594.html

      9. Why the heck are you running 98 standard?!?!?

I apologize again if some of this seems obvious but I am not familiar with your level of networking experience and the post did not provide a lot of info. Again I realize this post was aimed at Aerobahn and I am sorry if I intruded.

1,3,4,5. all hardware works and is properly installed.

        2. no, and it is ipconfig /release_all then ipconfig /renew_all

        8. that is just a problem with no solution

        9. that comp is from 98, and se came out 99

like i said before, this happened after my sister installed a downloaded program, even though as the network administrator ( ), i told her she cannot do that.

          2. Depends on what you were trying to do (unless 98 is different).

          8. The solution is at the bottom under all the crap.

          9. I was mainly being a pest

Didn't know from the original post that it was after she installed a program. What program?

I'll be happy to bow out of the post if you feel like I am just telling you what you already know.

i beleave is was a java runtime from www.java.com

that was a useless thing on her part, since my father has j++ 6 there... that means that no java.com app comes close to the java runtime that comp has..

Actually there are features that are supported in JRE (Java) that are not available via JVM (Microsoft). However, JRE should be able to run and coexist with JVM on Win 98. I dunno. This is the part where I bow out. I half wonder if a dll got overwritten, an .ini got changed, or an autoexec got modified. I assume you've uninstalled the JRE (which does nothing if it overwrote a dll). This is getting beyond what I know of Windows 98. Best of luck, though.

ip is automatically set by the router which acts as a dhcp server too. i do have a problem getting the computer to accept a new ip, and i forgot the dns server numbers so i can't mannually fix it as i had with the computer i am on (as a backup, i have internet connection but no network)

and i have jvm, jit, jet, and a few others on that comp do to the ammount of crap that was previously installed.

the router works fine, and i got the computer to automatically get an ip and the router recognizes the computer. that computer is still unable to connect to the network though, and somehow that gay java deinstallation removed jvm for the computer...

                      any help now?

i will replace that little can of crap with a cheap athalon xp, 512 ddr 333mh ram, 80 gig hdd (16 gig fat32 disk for os though), and the ti 4200 that i will get rid of from this comp (9600pro will replace it soon ), and win xp pro (ill see if i can upgrade my os to xp pro too, just for administrative rights)

Well I am not much help here, although I wish I was. My fix to everything is Format and Re-Install Windows XP Pro So get off that outdated Windows OS and UPGADE!!
