It is the speed of your memory more than the amount that will affect your score. I got a better score with 512MB of PC3200 memory than with 1024MB of PC2700.

Most of your issues, however, are not with your memory but with your vid card. I had a 5200FX installed and was not getting a good score. I switched to an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro and my scores nearly doubled (especially at high resolution).

FFXI relies more on processor and video card than on memory. You should be OK with 256MB of memory (of course more is better).

I understand that most issues are with the video card, but an addition of 512mb DDR should do something, my score was 4 points less then without the added memory

More memory is always a good thing but if you are bottlenecking at your video card you'll never see much of an advantage from the memory. The best comparison I can think of is a river. If you have a river that is clogged with debris and has a dam at the end you can clear out all the debis but the water coming out of the dam won't move any faster. Your problem is the 'dam' video card.
