  • About to Buy

I'm about to spend $300.00+ on some new equipment so I can play FFXI. I picked the stuff out from Tom's Hardware site, and want to know if I should make any changes before I order.

Motherboard - DFI LanParty NFII Ultra
    http://www.axiontech.com/prdt.php?src=BR&item=37067

Processor - MD ATHLON XP 2600 /333 FSB
    http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...&refer=B1zrat3

    Memory - Corsair 400 MHz 256MB DDR
    http://www.accupc.com/itemDetail.jsp...&refer=bizrate

This will compliment my crappy Geforce4 MX 440 w/ 128.0 VRAM. Hopefully I'll be able to optimize everthing to hold me over until I get my free PS2 HDD.

Drop the 400mhz ram, you don't need it. Your computer only has a 333FSB (get pc2700, save yourself some cash). Unless your mobo can support a processor with a 400mhz FSB then don't get the ram. If it can, upgrade your processor with a 400mhz fsb and keep the ram.

i don't think any athalon chipset has async memory. that is why i go intel all the way... you can forget about fsb (not mobo, but everything else)

I'd get a barton, I think your mobo supports them, I'm not sure. Get a barton with a FSB of 400mhz, Also, if moneys not that important get 2x 512 pc3200 DDR. with your nforce2 mobo, it'll rock.

Thanks for the input. I looked at those Bartons and the only one I could find that was running at 400FSB was an Athlon XP 3200, which was $400.00. That's way out of my price range, so I'm just going to downgrade my ram to FSB333. I'm probably going to buy 512 mb ram instead of 256 though, it would only cost about $30.00 more than what I would have spent before.
