Computer/FFXI Problems

First off, here's my specs:

Pentium 4 1.3 GHz
512 MB RDRAM
128 MB Geforce 4 TI 4800SE
Windows XP Professional
I'm running FFXI in 1024x768 resolution and 512x512 background resolution. All extras like MIP Mapping, etc. are off.

I have the latest drivers installed.

Lately, I've been lagging so bad in FFXI. Was in Valkurm today and in "S & R" bar I noticed I was recieving an average of 800-1200. It was really crazy. It was totally unplayable. It also has just been happening in Valkurm. Is it known to lag alot? I haven't been to Bastok or any other place lately, since I've decided it'd be easier just to hang out at Selbina for the sub job quest and leveling.

I also have to point out, my motherboard is old, and my video card can only run at 4x. So that's mainly the reason I have to keep the graphics down. But still, I think it should be performing a bit better.

So does anyone have any ideas of the problem?

Maybe you should try running some utility programs like norton and doing some hard drive clean-up and get rid of not needed files. Or you could always scan disk and defrag the hard drive. Not much but atleast its a start.

AGP 4x vs AGP 8x isn't the problem. Your CPU is a bit outdated, along with your older rambus memory. That's why you have your graphics set down.

Try also turning off your weather effects. Close un-needed programs and disable virus scanners.

Valkurm is a highly camped area, due to people competing to complete their subjob quests. That'll boost your S/R.

virus scanners don't require much memory to run (<4mb) that won't effect game play. if you have <800 type rdram, that will slow you down just a small bit (i have 800 type, and i get >5000 on bench). however, cpu really is outdated (the highest p3 has same speed). if you have higher level dsl or cable, it's your comp only, if you have lower than that, your connection isn't helping.
