  • Ghost in the Shell: Arise

It was recently announced Production IG is producing four prequel films for Ghost in the Shell. These seem to focus on the early days of Motoko and her time in Section 9. The usual cast is there and it seems to be hooking into the original films rather than SAC.

Interestingly, though, SAC is getting an online FPS spin-off alongside this. I guess they had to bring the Tachkomas back somehow.

      Hell yes.

I loved the parts of 2nd GIG that dealt with Motoko's origins and her early experiences with her new body. A prequel is the perfect way to go.

The art style looks much more in line with the first movie. I got used to the relative brightness of SAC. Not that I'm complaining. I'm sure they'll do a stellar job with it.

I've never really had much to complain about with Production IG. I like their continuity shifts with Blood and Blood+ and GitS, so I'm ok with prequels to the original movies.

I guess I was less keen on their Mass Effect anime, but that was mostly due to it having ME3's least interesting guy - James Vega - as a lead. In terms of story, animetion and treatment of the universe it seemed OK.

I guess in this case there's always some link between the movies, the mangas and the anime. Even if its not the same continuity, these characters and histories are usually the same. So you could still build part of Motoko's background on what was discussed by her or Kuze in the Individual Eleven storyline. Motoko, Batou and Togusa are easily among my favorite anime characters, so I'm always happy to see more of them

I just hope the other guys get more time to shine as well. Ishikawa and Arimaki get a lot of screen time but Paz, Bouma and Saito could use a little more action.

I'm not sure if there was any "continuity" from the first GITS movie and Innocence (which was emphatically sold as a "non-Hollywoodesque sequel") and the subsequent SAC line (OAVs and 2 TV seasons) In fact, the TV series have more in common with each other than the movies and the OAVs, because the TV series was set in an alternate universe (different timelines and key events and even characters), which further stood apart from Shirow Masamune's mangas.
