I find it interesting how some people project this sort of pretentiousness onto the series while others don't. I'm not going to pass value judgment on it - Gunbuster and Diebuster together shall always be Gainax's magnum opus in my heart - but it's like some sort of reverse-nostalgia effect.

Am I the only one that prefers Rebuild 1, 2 and 3 purely because they actually have an animation budget, and we no longer have to deal with the shitty 90's style of animation where entire series were clearly made on the budget for one episode and nobody has heard of light, shadows or shading ever?

I prefer it over the original, yes, but mostly because it's more coherent and less vague. I enjoyed it purely from an entertainment POV, but I greatly dislike Shinji; even more this time around, if that's possible.

While we're in this thread . . . I would have to wager that Neon Genesis Evangelion should really be considered "mainstream Anime" at this point.

Probably asking for it by bringing up the subject again but I think I finally found an anime more depressing and melodramatic than Evangelion called Attack on Titan.

The fanboys rave about it being deep and meaningful but it's just yet another anime adaptation of a melodramatic and overly violent anime. Think Evangelion but set in a Post-Apocalyptic quasi-medieval city rather than Post-Apocalyptic Tokyo.

It seems popular with the teenagers that seem to like ultraviolent stuff because it's "mature" and they don't know any better, but TBH the show is average at best.

Still one good thing is that the show doesn't mind depicting physically strong women as muscular. So the fanservice is less about impossible breasts.

I find the "titans" disturbing, as I often think that whoever made the manga artist's shit list, will find their animated mug in one of the directed episodes.

It's up on Crunchyroll, but Attack on Titan is pretty bad and overrated. Like I said, the fans keep yelling that it's really deep and meaningful but it really is not.

Okay I know I've been ragging on Attack on Titan but I do like one thing about it: the Opening Theme is pretty awesome even if the lyrics make little sense if you understand German.
