I only clicked on Japanator today because there was something with GitS on it.

Now if Netflix and whichever studio that holds the rights to GitS 2: Innocence and GitS SAC: SSS would be so kind as to put it on Netflix, I would be very happy.

Too bad Solid State Society was my least favorite SAC story. I'm glad the franchise is still active, but what I really want to see is a new plot line. They could skip the 3D and animate it with stick figures and I'd still squee like a j9.

Well, SSS is more or less the manga version of the "Puppetmaster" story from the original movie, isn't it? That would effectively end Motoko as a lead character.

While the series could stand on its own two without her and several episodes (and Innocence) have essentially proven that time and again, there's a core of the fanbase that would reject it. Kinda like how a few crazy people rejected the last two seasons of the X-Files because Mulder wasn't in all of them, even though they were still mostly about Mulder and the cast was doing just fine without David Duchovny and delivering the same solid episodes X-Files always hand.

Seems like the next new GitS project is still the 3D live action movie which willl be directed by Steven Spielberg. I don't know what to think about that yet, but I will admit you could have the IP fall into far, far worse hands so I'm glad its Spielberg. Just imagine if it was James Cameron... or Uwe Boll.

No, SSS was in the SAC continuity where Project 2501 never happened. Motoko had left Section 9 but still existed as a local entity, though she did take advantage of her ability to jump between platforms more in SSS iirc.

I love Motoko, but I agree that she isn't "needed." She's a fun, deep character but her story has very much been told. After all the back story in 2nd GIG I would even go so far as to say she's spent as a lead character. Ishikawa, Aramaki and Saito are all strong enough to carry a plot, the problem as you said would be getting people to come out and see them.

Well, thing about Saito is you can't have Saito without Motoko due to their history. She basically owns his ass for what happened in the war.

Ishikawa, Aramaki and especially Batou are characters that can carry a show, though.

I still haven't seen/read all things GitS yet. I'm finicky about renting, basically. Why rent when I can stream? Plus I pretty much loop SAC and SAC 2nd Gig because they're worth seeing again. I tend to prefer this series over most because it feels much like an American crime drama rather than an anime. For all the talk about a bleek dystopia I find it to be one of the most down-to-earth shows exploring how technology could actually evolve and affect society. And the characters are by far some of the most human in any anime I've watched.

Solid State Society was streamable on netflix for a long time, but when I went to watch it after reading this thread I found it had been rotated out. ><

They've had the first season's "box" art labeled as "Solid State Society" forever, but I've never actually seen anything anything aside from the two seasons, the "movie" version of the two seasons, GitS and GitS 2.0.

Oh well, guess I'll just rent it when I get a PS3 in the next month or so.

I actually liked it as a standalone.







Anyway .... I don't know how well 3D could play for this movie when they could probably use it on Innocence. 3D tends to work more favorably with more dynamic scenes. SSS had a lot of static scenes. The impact would probably be really strong in certain scenes ...

At the beginning where they are looking to apprehend a wanted suspect; the sniper showdown with Saito; and at that very dramatic and emotional climax where Togusa decided to take his own life to prevent his daughter from undergoing cybernetic replacement.
