I've just been watching this anime, apparently this began showing in Japan earlier this year, and really enjoying it.

Well I'm up to episode 10 and I"m hooked so I thought I'd review what I think so far so if any of you are interested in giving it a try you can:
Kemeno no Souja Erin is also presented with the translated title of "Beast Player Erin" in English and is a dramatic fantasy.
This story follows a young girl named Erin (which apparently means a "rosy apple") and is equal parts a coming of age tale and a look at the interaction of people towards each other and animals. At the same time you can't help but get the sense that it also will become a sweeping quest type journey with all the hallmarks of the "Heros Journey" that keep cropping up. Even the opening and closing songs have a deeper meaning which becomes apparent as they are played in the episodes as back drops to the drama as it unfolds. They also seem to foreshadow things to come.
Erin and her mother are outsiders in the village in which she was born into and though she is the granddaughter of the village chief is looked down on by many. Her green eyes betray her Kiri ancestry, a mysterious tribe who lives on the fringes of society in the forest, which makes things hard for her. Erin, like her mother, seems to have a strong connection to nature and she starts off wanting to be a vet caring for the Touda (dragon-like creatures) that the subjects of "The Real King" rely on to win wars against thier enemies. As the story progresses Erin learns her ancestry is more than it seems and the rules of the grown-up world come with harsh consequences.
The story does unfold slowly but all of the symbolic touches add ambience and speak of humans connection to nature. For instance at one time when Erin is threatened by a Touda and rescued by her mother we also watch a parrallel scene showing an eagle protecting her chick form a weasel. The reason for this slow pace seems to be that we are learning as Erin does about the true state of the world and watching her character develope. She learns from both animals and humans as she progress and thus the story is really told through her eyes with an occasional narrator voice over at the start and end of each episode. Also the pace allows the anime to wallow in the joys ad beauty of the small things in nature around the characters as the drama unfolds.
I can see great things on the horizon for our heroine but we are reminded that all things, including her, need to mature by the narrator. She seems to be touching people's lives who will become important later in the story so far.
Music plays a big part in the story and I think this song is my favorite so far.
