Re: Looking to get into anime

For sci-fi type anime, it won't go wrong with the later release of Macross series/movies/OVAs. Last month I was re-watching Macross Zero. Although Macross Zero was made in year 2002, it is still awesome compare to today's anime. Awww.. that reminds me to add Macross: Do you remember love? in my re-watch list

If you looking for movies, FLCL. It's not a film, but the run time is very similar (a little under three hours)

For films, I'd recommend Spirited away. There are a few others, but you wouldn't enjoy them if you haven't already seen the series (Gundam, an excellent series)

There are tons of good series out there. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Azumanga Daioh, Cowboy Bebop, Gundam (UC. The other timelines are full of fail and char-clones.) After you've spent far too much time watching anime, Lucky Star is awesome and full of win.

Really though, this is somewhat like asking what you should watch if you want to get into live action films. You should watch things that sound interesting to you, not basing it off the way they were produced. Personally, I'd recommend going to a site like Crunchyroll, and just browsing for a series you like.

For comedy there is Slayers (actually only seen the OAV's so far) and Nadescio, the series has more comedy then the OAV but the OAV is a nice continuation to the story once you've seen the series. For very silly comedy there is Ranma 1/2 and Love Hina. Ranma is episodic which makes it good to just throw in a DVD of it and watch them for a laugh.

Chobits has a good amount of comedy and was interesting though I think the manga was better.

For absolutely bizarre comedy, Excel Saga and Puni Puni Poemy. Watch Excel first.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

have to agree on the chobits manga being better. I made it like five episodes into the anime before I gave up on it. It was just awful.

If Sci-Fi is your thing, you'd probably enjoy Gunbuster, Diebuster, and Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann quite a bit.

OVA stands for original video animation, or OAV stands for original animated video.

Original video animation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Usually OVA is released in situation like:
                1) After the Anime TV series is ended, but the anime is so popular that the fans wants to see more. Instead of making a 2nd season of the anime TV series (which requires more $$/time/resource to produce), OVA (usually few episodes) is made.
                2) Sometimes there are OVA before anime TV series is release. If the OVA is popular, there is a good chance for the TV series is made. Some anime only have OVA, never made it to TV series or movies.

In the past, the quality of OVA is higher in general, compare to the TV series.

                Awww, Armando beats me... kekeke

Laputa: Castle in the Sky is a classic too (made in year 1986, same producer from Spirited Away). In FFXI, the Sky has a very similar feel with the Sky Castle in Laputa

Uhh I'll recommend Eyeshield 21, it may seem odd because it's about football, but it's easy to get into, and it's easily become one of my favorites now.

                  One Piece is an amazing series if you like...anything. >_>;;

And Hajime no Ippo is amazing as well, I just started getting into it, although it's been out for about 15 years or so, if I remember correctly.

And I always forget if this is allowed or not, but here's a manga website that has tons of stuff on it that you could check out, they sort it by categories and you could just click on one to check something out.

Err actually let me just pm it to you...I never remember what'll get deleted. :x

Thanks to Roguewolf for the sig. :D

                    Thanks.
Good anime I can remember of the top of my head are Naruto, Bleach, Claymore, Hajime no Ippo, Outlaw Star, Monster, Berserk, Blood+, Fist of the North Star, Basilisk, Death Note, Fate Stay Night, Ninja Scroll the Series, Ruroni Kenshin(sp?), and Darker than Black.

There are plently more, but that is all I can remember without being infront of my anime collection at home.

I own a reasonable collection of foreign language movies and I always sub, never dub. Some of the dubs can be atrocious and the others very mediocre at best, so, I can't imagine that'll be any different on animated movies. I guess that means if I want intersting anime I'll have to import the R2 DVDs. Luckily I'm in the UK so my DVD format is R2 anyways ^^

I'm at work in Africa just now and my internet privileges are extremely limited by this websense filter that I'm behind but I'll be sure and check out fansub and "manga" in general once I get home. I've kinda dabbled in graphic novels before with the old AvP, Green Hornet, Daredevil, Matrix and Halo stuff (and the Clerk comics ) but nothing serious so I'm definitely open to suggestions.

The good thing is that anything I order up online now will be waiting for me when I get home in mid-February
Phew, looking at your anime list I thought you were interested in dubbed stuff.

I recomend you to check Crunchyroll, there you can watch most current anime and some old series in original language with subs, along with series and music from Asia (mainly Japan). There are a LOT of complete series there, but I would also recomend Musashi in the drama section.

Just beware that site is really adictive, and you might want to torrent some fansubbed anime too, but it will depend on how good your connection is.

Edit > I just hope Crunchy doesn't get filtered. >_<

boy some good stuff here...I'm just gonna say this:

I've found that sometimes the box sets for TV shows are a better deal than just buying it by the disk. Personally I've waited for box sets to come out rather than but 3-4 episodes at $20-$30 a pop. Somtimes it's cheap but popluar things can be up to $100 a set.(such is the case when I bought all those Cardcaptor Sakura DVDs)

Just ordered up 'Blood: The Last Vampire' and I'll definitely be checking out the Ghost in the Shell TV series when I get back. Someone has already bought me 2 Ghost in the Shell movies so after I watch them It'll make sense to see what I can get my hands on from the TV series

Edit: What have you all done to me? I just went and ordered:

Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex - 1st GIG Complete Box Set
Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex - 2nd GIG Complete Box Set
Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society OVA
Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex - The Laughing Man

Edit 2: Just ordered this too as it seemed like a bargain.

The Stand Alone Complex series, especially 2nd Gig, is really really good. Great choices!

I saw someone mention FLCL (Fooly Cooly) upthread. I'm getting into it now that it's being replayed on AS and I gotta ask if it's supposed to be that friggin' WEIRD, or is it just the dubbed version?

Touching on other series to check out, others have already mentioned Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, the various versions of Macross, and Trigun which are all fantastic. I'll also recommend the original Bubblegum Crisis/Crash (the new ones are meh), Eureka Seven, Bleach, Full Metal Alchemist, Blood Plus...

...and if you're really adventurous, check out a very old-school series called Gatchaman, which went by the name G-Force: Battle of the Planets here in the US. It'll be a nice lead-up to the movie currently in production.
