    Re: Looking to get into anime

    Seems like the OP is into action films, and not so much psychological thriller or works too tinted by cerebral matter. If his gut reaction to Spirited Away is "a bit 'kiddy'" instead of "oh wow, so many things animated at once, and done so well!", then probably should stay away from recommendations based on "production value".

    * * *

    Try well known comedy (e.g. "Love Hime" type) or most of the typical shounen action anime. Don't really think sport or sport-inspired (anything involving long, draw out fights like "Bleach" or "Yu Yu Hakusho") would be your cup of tea.
    Bamboo shadows sweep the stars,
    yet not a mote of dust is stirred;
    Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
    leaving no trace in the water.

        Re: Looking to get into anime

        From what I can tell, there were many "a bit kiddy" comments, which leads me to believe that my initial assumption was spot on; productions aimed at a younger target audience are not what he's looking for.

        That or he just wants lots of action and violence. Could be either.

        In any case, I really should have mentioned Black Lagoon because it's action in it's purest form and it's really, really good. I especially enjoyed the second season as I found it highly thought provoking and rather disturbing at times, much more so than the lighter first season, not to mention the step up in the gore level.

          Re: Looking to get into anime

          May have already been mentioned....

          Anything by Miyazaki is just made of pure win, utterly utterly awesome on all levels. Of course if you didn't like Spirited Away... >.> (burn the heretic!)

          Still though, anything by Miyazaki gets a high recommendation from me. The Lupin the Third stuff can be rather funny. I was initially put off by it, but really started to get into it after seeing a bit more and especially the Castle of Cagliostro.

          The other Vampire Hunter D movie was also interesting. I will say that those movies are a bit more bloody and just a tad bit more ripping off of the lead girl's shirt than I care for.

          The character designer of the movies is Yoshitaka Amano of Final Fantasy fame.
          Is that why it looks so familiar?

          The Last Unicorn, old and rather dated but I enjoyed it as a kid, and it's still a pretty good one IMO.

          Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in our Early Days are both good movies. Mostly done by one person too, which makes them rather impressive. The director seems to like the somewhat open endings though.

          Escaflowne and Trigun are both good. I should say Escaflowne the series was good, the movie sucked.

          One I really liked is Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal. This is the only Rurouni Kenshin flick that I've seen though but it has made me very interested in the rest of it.

          Chobits is another one that I enjoy. Naruto is great although long.

          I would advise against Inuyasha even though I liked it initially. It has too many demon of the week episodes and very little progressing the storyline.

          There was a pretty good anime that I saw a long time ago, I can't remember the name, but it involved Mecha, a singer, an AI based off of the singer, and some other stuff, really good. I think it started with an M... But I can't remember. I'm sure someone else knows what I'm talking about though.

          Oh, and Wikipedia has some really good writeups about all of these anime. I'd recommend looking these up on there if you aren't doing it already.

          You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

          I don't have a big ego, it just has a large mouth.

                Re: Looking to get into anime

                I just got done watching Fowl's Moving Castle. Great movie loved the story.

                I'd really like to see more movies like this. But since I'm very new in these types movies i have no idea where to start. There was another one I remember watching on the Cartoon Network when I was in the hospital. I'll list the few things i remember about it. I'd really love to start collecting these types of anime and stories.

                There was a lil girl, a small dragon being attacked by paper birds i think...or it was paper men...Twin witches where one had a huge son who always wanted to play and was always in a diaper...I remember tho at the end of the movie i thought it was just like a japanese adaptation of Alice in Wonderland.

                Thanks for the help if no one can think of it I'll keep trying to remember and google away...
