  • VLC Player Question

    Hello

Lately I've been using the VLC players to watch my anime, but something strange has occrured recently. When I turn it on, it seems I get no Video but only Audio. As in, I see a black screen with nothing and all I hear is the audio track.

I've check the VLC fourms but they say something about voodoo magic, and that doesn't really help much.

So I was wondering has anyone else encountered this problem recnetly and was able to solve it? I've tired reinstalling the program and I made sure that my Video Track was not disabled. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Are you sure you're watchign a file that has the proper codecs.

WMV3 is avi's are notorious for that, since M$ format has licence restrictions and Videolan want no part in that. Though it would tell you WMV3 in the error box.

I have never heard of voodoo magic. But if it's not a codec problem, it's probably a directX problem. It's M$ XPs way of preventing pirating or whatever, though technically it's going it straight to the video card(if you want to call that speeding it up) and can not be copy and pasted or changed, or cloned video, etc.

Try going to prefences in VLC and play with the output options. You can try openGL or directdraw or others.

It seems to by pass a lot of checkings done by other apps. For example, it plays partially downloaded movies just fine. And it plays DVDs regardless of it's region.

              Re: VLC Player Question

VLC or videolan is a completely opensourced swiss army knife for video on computer.

Or tries to. It will play anything as long as there's an open source without the need to go hunting for codecs or subtitles and such.

To make a long story short if you don't want to jump through hoops to try to get something to play (like region problems or all the different avis out there) VLC is a good program to run it. In practice VLC is a go to have because you don't have to worry much about H264, dvix5, xvid, acc, ogm, mkv, SSA, SSR, SST(all different subtitles), etc, etc

There are exceptions like WMV3 which is own by MS and until there is fully open source decoder, it won't play it(MS tries hard to stop people from reverse engineering it).

It doesn't play much without a decent codec pack tho. Like K-lite or somesuch.

waaa? It plays right out of the download.

In fact it CAN'T play from outside codecs yet. The builds that enable plugins folder is not implimented in releases.

K-lite would help you on WMP or other players but Videolan is all internal, and won't care if you have 100 codecs already installed.

You are thinking of the wrong player

So you mean, VLC can play a Xvid movie without installing Xvid? I never tried it before, k-lite is like the very first thing I install after installing windows o_O

That's what i thought. I'm the same way in that a codec pack is one of the first things I install.. Kuu is saying otherwise tho.

I admit I could just be thinking of mpc, but I thought vlc relied on outside codecs too.

Yes Mpc would require codec packs, but Videolan does not.

Videolan does not(though developers plan to implement it) the ability to use external plugins. The only way to "add" a codec to videolan is to complile it yourself(which to most people isn't an option)

VLC works out of the box(download). It's both an advantage and problem. There is an error with B-frames in .82, with divx 5.0.2 which has made it slow to a crawl, and users of VLC go back to .81. (See the problem with having codecs build in?) Though it should be fixed soon as supposely a new version is already in final testing phases.

Use it for what it's worth.

If you doubt it, you can even look at the perefences, to see the list of codecs built in and customizable options.

Yep. K-lite doesn't interfere with VLC because VLC doesn't care if it exist. You can uninstall it if you want, but remember that other players will use it, like WMP, mpc, etc.

Because of that, if you have any problem with a video or audio, playing it on WMP or videolan might give different results.

                        Edit:
I just remembered that VLC latest version does note something about some kind of passing to alow it to play WMV3 on windows only version and only if you use a certain output(Though WMV3 never works in any event for me on VLC). So maybe theres exceptions.
