As far as the plot goes, it was very well thought out and well executed up to the Freeza saga -- which is what Toriyama-sensei originally intended the series to end at. However, due to the shows popularity he was pressured into continuing for two more seasons. Now, arguably the Cell saga is still a very creative and well thought out saga, whereas the Buu saga may not have been as good as the previous two, but still was not complete garbage.

Guess it depends on your age. One of my godsons was head over heels with anything Pokemon. I bought him a Japanese Game Boy SP to play Pokemon. He watched the anime and I'm pretty sure his mom taped them too so he could watch them over and over. I bought him JP plushies and all the JP model kits. That was a hell of a Christmas. I'll never forget his face when he saw/opened that huge wrapped box and there were 151 smaller wrapped boxes to open! I forget how long it took him to put all the models together but it wasn't long. (They were super easy kid level models.) So ya, I'm confident that if you are of a certain age, the anime is something special. Worst anime has got to be hentai anime. Followed closely by any kind of remake and then by any anime being a parody of other anime but not making any sense in the process. I also find most fillers for long episodic series as being failboat. In fact, thinking about it, the anime industry probably has more failures than successes over the past 30 years...
