  • Re: The Worst Animes Ever Created

    A typical Saturday night then?

I never understood everyone's hated of dubbing. I suppose its a purist thing. Personally I'd rather be able to watch a show than spend half my time reading the lines at the bottom of the screen.

You dont spend as much time reading as you may think. Subtitles are designed to be short and you can certainly watch while you read. Its just something you get used to i suppose.

I guess so, watched a subtitled ff7: ac and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Seems like I missed a lot onscreen due to reading the subtitles.

As far as the dubbed vs. subtitle I can see the preffered differences. Partially it is a purist thing, but also the subtitles can be more accurate in what the characters are saying and can completly change perspective of that scene. The dubbed and actual conversation's focuses can change, making the scene seem less coherent. An example of this would be a scene were a person will be admiring the weapon the other guy is using, say a sword, and would say "The craftsmanship of this sword is amazing!" but end up being dubbed "Your swordsmanship is amazing!".

In the end one is addressing focus to the weapon while the other is addressing focus to a person's skill with the weapon. Some of dubs are really bad and without even looking at the subtitled version you could easily identify by the fact of what they are saying making absolutly no sense to what is occuring. Horrible dubs from lack of an actual attempt to match the conversation to it's translation in the lip sinking (if you can call it that >.>). It is known well enough that many animes in order for them to ever see a dubbing or State side release, the company taking it sometimes has to make agreements to keep the dubbing as true to what it was.

An example of one of these agreements was "Miyuzaki's Spirited Away" the only way Miyuzaki allowed Disney to dub his anime was that they did not cut-out any scenes and that they kept the conversation as true as they could. The people doing the dubbing for it even had to pass the translations of it by Miyuzaki for him to approve or consult him when a translation would not work right for an alternative that they could use.

              EDIT:

On note of the Naruto dubbing, I would have to agree many parts of it seems very awful. Not just the dubbing itself but the voice over actors expressions of the scenes are just so out of place.

Yea I especially hate the Naruto dubbing... The voices dont go with the characters at all and they cant pronounce half the names. Shikamaru (Schick, like teh razor company, ah, ma, roo) changed into Shika maru... ok well I cant really show how they say it but if you watched the anime youd know the difference.

Well pronouncing Shikamaru it breaks to 4 syllables (Shi ka ma ru). The problem they do when pronoucing this name is that they miss to pronounce the k so they end up saying Shi a ma ru. Also forgetting that pronouncing with Romanji names has a consistency so you can hear them pronounce the a as you would would hear in metabolism as opposed to the ah sound.

You hear lot of those mistakes though when an english voice over actor tries to pronounce a japanese word, they do horrible with "n" "chi" "shi" "tsu" "ie" and "iie" (With a english voice over actor trying to use those last two you won't know at all if they mean "No" or "House").

Naruto after Sasuke joins Ochimaru. (Wow, its all fillers)

Yugioh. (Not just the dub, they milked this thing out so much... go straight to the manga and stay there)

GATZ.. (or something. Horrible animation and just ugly, well maybe except from the nudi- nevermind).

Pokemon. (I can easily describe any episode before I've seen it).

That's all on my mind, probably more I dislike...

Anyway, when I was younger I loved, and kinda still love, the whole Digimon series. I like the art style and the vampire bad guy from season 1(been so long I forgot his name... Ven-mystor-mon something I have no idea) was the first 'cool' bad guy I saw as a young lad. Watching Fox and 11, I always got the same nonsense mostly from america with the bad guys being very merciful and all that.

I don't think anyone with Naruto in their sig has the right to call anything overated ;p.

                      Double Post Edited:
PS. Yeah... I don't see how someone could hate Hamtaro. I think anyone who instantly calls kiddish stuff vomit needs to grow up. Just because it was aimed for a lower age crowd doesn't mean it isn't worth anything.

                      Double Post Edited:
One more thing... X had the worst ending fight ever. It wasn't a bad anime, but the ending sucked.

Everyone knows the stuff that's horrible: Fist of the North Star, all the silly-mon type shows, most of the game-related anime (yes, including FFU).

Interesting choices commented from above posts:

Akira: animation was cutting-edge for its time period, soundtrack is excellent. Storyline was rather weak and disjointed, but it's not worthy to be in the "hate" category for anyone IMO.

X: I didn't like the way everyone ended up having no choices except for Kamui, and yes, the end fight scene was L-A-M-E (as opposed to the rest of the battles, which were mostly creative and cool), but again, shouldn't be included on the list of anime to despise.

Samurai Deeper Kyo: Oh, my. Pretty horrible story, and animation was pretty meh too. Not the worst anime I've seen, but it certainly didn't impress.

DBZ: Simply awful. Probably #1 contender on my list of anime to despise that everyone else seems to like. Only thing that saves DBZ completely from the trash heap is the occasional honestly funny one-liners.

Tenchi Muyo and spinoffs: I actually liked Tenchi in Tokyo. The whole season was like one bad acid trip after another, really showed some courage on the part of the writers who were willing to take a show in some interesting directions. Not every episode is successful, but I have to give them an A for effort in breaking away from the anime norm. Rest of the Tenchi series can bite me, it's standard fluff.

Ninja Scroll: How did this land on anyone's hate list? Ok, the storyline isn't "that" good, but the animation is pretty good (and extremely good for the period it was created in), and the characters were inventive and interesting.

One Piece. I can't imagine how that anime was created... at a cocktail party by a really drunk guy, perhaps?

"Okay, so, *hiccup* let's do a story about, like *hiccup* a pirate *hiccup* with stretchy arms *hiccup* and he shouts 'Gum-Gum' all the time *hiccup*. And then have a pirate with three swords *hiccup* one in each hand and one in his mouth *hiccup*. Holy crap somebody *hiccup* get me another vodka!"
