If Dragonball Z was "Anime", I'd hate anime

I think of it more as a japanese saturday morning kids cartoon, which happens to be in sort of an anime style.

I've watched it a few times but it just makes me laugh because they always do this stupid thing where one guy looks at another guy and sweats, then that guy looks at the first guy and sweats, then they do that some more, then there are kind of these grunts like "aunhnnn!" then "ahahannnnnn?" and so on. This goes on for about 35 minutes or so before something happens, or usually they break for a commercial after 10 minutes of grunting.

Seriously, for many people this would be a horrible intro to anime since they'd decide to never watch any of it. What Pai Pai says certainly makes sense, obviously the sweating faces just going "AUNNNNN!!" a lot must really cut down on the production costs.

Oddly enough, Its not bad when these horrible "battles" (HA~!) are not happening. I saw one show with the two little kids, one with black hair and one bald, where they were running around doing tasks for the old man guy (such as digging trenches in the dirt and stuff.) There was really quite a lot of action happening, with more action with the little kids digging than in most so called DBZ "battles." It was quite charming.

I agree that Cowboy bebop is a better intro for us older folk. Unfortunately I've not seen much "anime" at all. I've seen some DBZ which would have turned me off the genre, then I've seen some cowboy bebop episodes which I thought were pretty cool (I rented the DVD movie too but found it to be a bit slow and not really as fun as the single episodes.)

Add in that some of the DBZ fans seem a bit wacky. I guess there are some forums where some of them claim to have super powers and are able to do Sayin or whatever things. These forums are made fun of on several other sites and are mildly entertaining.

It seems to me that most DBZ fans are fairly young. I'm not trying to offend, I only say this because I am fairly old
I find it pretty darn unwatchable due to way too much pausing and sweating. I've seen more action from geriatrics when they announce free samples at the supermarket.

AHAH I could not agree with Reikou more about the constipation and such. I think in a way the shows that I saw were entirely created to have lots of grunting right before a bunch of commercials to sell things to Japanese children. Otherwise, it really makes no sense why that would be happening. Grunt! Grunt GRUNT! GRUNT! AUHH? AUHHH? (announcer voice over)

I swear to god DBZ is the "gateway drug" of anime.(for us Americans anyway)

I started watching DBZ, d/loaded...

I mean watched on TV... all the episodes, then started talking to people about anime, and found the wonders of REAL anime.

I'm hooked now, and it's amazing how crappy I find DBZ now. Though it is still quite ammusing to watch when I'm bored. But really I can see how people would think anime sucks by just basing their opinion on DBZ

You guys really don't know how good DBZ is until you see all the movies. It just seems like the creaters put more detail and all around effort to the movies. And wait till you see the Brolly movie . But the thing I never liked about DBZ is that the same character always lands the final blow (mostly Goku). But anyways check out the movies.

*shrugs* the movies may have better animation and what not (like most anime series, but not all like the Inuyasha movies >_>) but I still don't think the movies are enough to bring the DBZ up and make it too great.

Yea I could go on for pages and pages about how much DB sucks ...but I'll just leave at this.

DB is crap, if you seriously think this is a good show you

1) are under the age of 12
2) have the aptitude of someone under the age of 12
3) probably havent seen any other anime
4) suck

My god, if all anime was this horrible, I would never watch it. Hell, if this was the first show I saw, I would have forsaken anime altogether.

I really enjoyed Dragon Ball when I was younger. I started watching it back in 1990, and stopped in 96. I collected all the manga too. Anywho, I don't care for the US dubbed version. It's absolutely horrendous in my opinion, as the voices and new digital background music just doesn't fit after watching the original. Whe nthe popularity boomed in the US, I got absolutely sick of the series... I can't tell you how many times I got asked "what happens?" in High School, as well as how many times I got this reaction. What?? He DIES?!?!?!?!"" - -;; Needless to say, I won't go near the EN version, in ANY form with a 10-feet pole~

Dragon Ball Z IS REAL ANIME

dangit, the Japanese love it too, you know. Just because it's mainstream in america does not make it bad.

Dragon Ball (the first one, with little Goku) is amongst the greatest mangas/comics ever

the guy who does Naruto, LOVES Dragon Ball, he looks up to Toriyama Akira

nearly every current artist who does action manga was inspired by Dragon Ball

3 big comics in Japan now, Once Piece, Naruto, and Shaman King, their creators were big Toriyama Akira fans.
And I don't think they're all 12-and-under idiots who don't know a thing about anime ^^

When DBZ came around, it was suppost to end with Freeza

I mean, Freeza is a galactic conquorer, Goku reaches the (then) pinnacle of power, the fight climaxes with a planet exploding!

Toriyama Akira wanted to end it then, but ! Fans demanded more. So he gave fans what they wanted, he added a new villian.
all the way up to Buu

he FINALLY quit after Buu, DB:GT is not his creation, merely him licensing out his characters.


I really hate the music they added to the American dubbing though.

Naruto is great too, I love it. But if someone can complain about DBZ dragging it out... Every other episode of Naruto is about dealing with inner angst for being a loser/weak/alone/ignored etc. all ending with Naruto cheering everyone up. There is nothing wrong with that, to say so would be nitpicking.

i got a movie of DBZ tree of might i think its called but i aint sure could be completely wrong in japanese. and its pretty good i like how they scream and shit but thats just me...and im sure theres better animes out there and i would like to see them..but havent gotten around to doing it but i will eventually. im 20 btw. if age matters...
