Actually, Magical Snow Fairy Sugar is nearly everything you didn't say

It's a children's anime, and when I say "children's" i mean young children's. This of course, doesn't mean that anyone over 5 can't watch it.

The wonderful thing about Sugar is that it doesn't make kids feel stupid. It ain't no damned Teletubbies or Pokemon. It presents children to real life situations through the eyes of the main character and her fairy friends.

The story of Sugar is actually shockingly morbid for a children's show, I thought. Saga is an 11 year old girl who lives with other relatives because her mother died when she was young. Her mother was a beautiful, talented piano player, and passed on her skills to Saga before she died.

Saga is a very strong young girl, however, and works her hardest to live like any other child would. She loves to play the piano and take baths. Of course, the twist of the show is that she meets a beautiful Fairy woman who brings to her Sugar, an immature young Snow Fairy who's on a quest to gain ranking by collecting "Twinkles" or something...but don't worry, it isn't like Pokemon when the story revolves around finding little creatures named "Twinkles."

Sugar loves waffles, and she's unbelieveably cute. She and Saga are the main characters, and play important roles in delivering important themes and messages to young children, especially those who unfortunately live unlike many of us did. The cute, bubbly character designs and the bright, charming colours also help appeal to younger kids who may not know what's going on.

You know what? I love Sugar, and I'm not afraid to say it. If there's anything that makes me happy, it's being able to see a children's anime like this in the world we live in today. For once, children can watch a show that isn't commercially spawned by a line of cheap toys or videogames, one that isn't just another excuse to make money. The creators of Sugar sure as hell knew what they were doing, and the dream to help children learn through shows like this is something wonderful that I only thought Miyazaki did these days.

*Sorry for the lengthy post, I was just excited that someone was interested in this and not Ninja Scroll or Akira!*
